They also don't expire or go bad - although the valve can start to deteriorate (probably would take almost decades though)... Regardless, you can think of investing in a Jetboil CrunchIt to ensure emptying the cans completely and making them recycling bin ready. Waterproof Camping Gear & Kit Repairs At Wood To Water, we consider keeping your kit dry and usable one of the most important things when out on the trail. We have a wide range of dry bags, waterproof map cases and waterproof material and waterproofing treatments like Nikwax, to keep your gear free from water and dirt. Read More Another huge advantage of the WindBurner 1.8 L is its modularity. You can use the same stove base for the 1 L WindBurner cooking pot. The 1 L cooking pot plops onto the WindBurner’s base just as well as the giant 1.8 L pot. This means you can convert your group system to a solo or couple’s system without having to buy a whole new integrated canister system. The 1 L WindBurner cookpot is 2/3rds the price of all the least expensive integrated systems we considered, so choosing the 1L accessory pot offers some cost savings if you’re ok with the weight. Of course for this price the JetBoil Zip has a few shortcomings compared to higher-priced models that you’ll want to be aware of. First, the burner’s output is limited to 4,500 BTUs. That’s still enough for the Zip to boil its smaller .8 liter capacity in under three minutes, but limits its applications for serious cooking. Another common complaint with the Zip is its burner control, which uses a compact polymer knob rather than the usual extended wire design to dial in the perfect flame. Some users complain that it puts their hands a little too close for comfort when making adjustments on the fly, but with a little practice it’s a minor flaw at best. Pros:Also, keep in mind that the dependability of the MightyMo’s piezo ignitor will always be an issue. They rarely remain functional for long, so always carry a lighter or matches when using this stove (as you should have with you, anyway.) Weight Yes, there are faster boiling stoves out there but 2m 15sec is very good. But more importantly, the fast boiling system of stoves such as Jetboil Flash goes out the window then the perfect conditions are removed and some wind/cold weather is brought to the environment. In addition, Jetboil boasts the Stash will boil a half-liter (500 mL) of water in 2.5 minutes thanks to its patented FluxRing design. For those who don’t know, Jetboil adds metal pleats to the bases of its cookware, effectively increasing the surface area, transmitting more heat, and reducing heating times. Carrying Whether you are doing a short day walk or you are looking to do a longer expedition for a few days, the load carrying kit that you use to transport all your other gear can be the difference between making it to the end and cutting your trip short. Read More Can reach a rolling boil in roughly three minutes with half the fuel consumption of traditional systems

The only other thing to consider with using standard larger cookware is that the burner itself is quite small and you may have issues with heat distribution and food cooking evenly.

Wind Performance

If you want a stove which can adjust from roaring power to a gentle simmer, then the MightyMo is well worth considering Important to note is that of the lighter stoves, only the Soto has a regulator, and none of them have the push-button piezo ignitor native to the MightyMo. It’s hard to argue those features aren’t worth the extra ounce or so .

When comparing fuel types, things get surprisingly complicated. I’ll try to summarize without getting too much into the boring details here. As I mentioned before, JetBoil’s own “Jetpower” fuel, as well as some other more “premium” fuels, uses a specific mixture. It’s composed of 80% isobutane and 20% propane. Other environmental conditions will affect fuel efficiency, so this is a variable that one must also monitor regularly. Jetboil’s further-refined simmer control system really makes a big difference when fuel conservation is necessary!

Jetboil Stash Stove

The MSR WindBurner Personal 1 L is an excellent stove with almost all the benefits of our best stove for groups, the WindBurner Duo. While we were happy to take on the WindBurner’s bulk and weight when we cook for a group, we dismissed the 1 L WindBurner as being too heavy and bulky for a solo integrated canister system. Esbit stoves also have arguably the lightest weight fuel requirement and most efficiency per 1 L per burn. However, an Esbit stove can be difficult to light and often have a fishy odor. Additionally, solid fuel tablets can be difficult to find and take much longer to boil water than a gas stove. For a while, solid fuel stoves were allowed on Forest Service and Park Service land even when alcohol stoves were banned. Now that the loophole has been closed, I’m less enamored with Esbit stoves. Additionally, as fuel canister stove technology has gotten more efficient in burn time and weight, there are fewer reasons to use Esbit stoves. ALCOHOL STOVE If you’re not too limited on space and weight, we’d recommend the Genesis just for its superior cooking capacity. This cooking system comes with two burners, a pot and a frying pan, so you can cook all types of meals. It’s also easy to use, reliable, has great fuel efficiency and the temperature control is precise.
