When I first read the play - I remember a few classmates being confused that one family encountered the same girl, which went beyond coincidence - far too contrived. This is NOT the case - that's just a twist - if you had assumed that than you'll not be able to sympathise with Eva Smith's plight (society prefers strong characters even if s/he are victims suffering the utmost misfortune).

In 1986 Richard Wilson directed a production at the Royal Exchange, Manchester with Geraldine Alexander as Sheila Birling, Hugh Grant as Eric Birling and Graeme Garden as Inspector Goole. [16]

An Inspector Calls Context Notes - Learn GCSE English Literature". OxNotes GCSE Revision. Archived from the original on 5 December 2019 . Retrieved 8 December 2019. The story crafting in this play has got to be one of best ever, it had such an intense effect on me. The thrill and ominous tension had me on the edge of the seat even though I've already seen the 2015 TV movie adaptation. It speaks volumes about the play itself. A key character in the play, and one who controls and manipulates the action, is the inspector of the title, Inspector Goole. His name is a wry joke, an indication of the supernatural element of the play. The entire play is set in the drawing room of the Birley family, as Inspector Goole questions the family about a young working-class woman, Eva Smith, also known as Daisy Renton, who has apparently killed herself. The family are nonplussed but in the course of being questioned are revealed to have each played a significant part in what was effectively the destruction of this young woman's life. Each character has contributed either a callous action, or a thoughtless one. Each episode increases in irony, as the characters unknowingly express views which they may or may not come to rue when they turn out to have a personal application. By the end of the play each character has reacted according to their temperament, whether they have found the events a sobering experience, or intend to put the revelations and offer of a new way of thinking behind them. Sybil Birling, "a rather cold woman" of about fifty, is Arthur's wife. As the leader of a charitable organisation, she assumes a social and moral superiority over Inspector Goole, whose questioning style she frequently refers to as "impertinent" and "offensive". Like her husband, she refuses to accept responsibility for the death of Eva Smith, and seems more concerned with maintaining the family's reputation, even going so far as to lie and deny that she recognizes the girl's picture. She derides women like Eva as immoral, dishonest, and greedy. With its tightly wound and didactic plot 'An Inspector Calls' is among the finer examples of the play world. While not as fanciful or elaborate as some of the greatest works by masters such as Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde in his style Priestly manages to pull off what he must. It is in fact the simplicity of his work that creates such an appeal, because it touches more at the heart of humanity and society. The young girl who allegorically represents the working class in a capitalist society; she doesn't have any lines in the play. All Birling characters behaved in ways that completely altered her life for the worst, culminating in her suicide by drinking some strong disinfectant. The inspector reads her diary before interrogating the Birlings. She is described as being young and pretty, with dark eyes. She also changes her name from Eva Smith to Daisy Renton. Again, time makes its entrance here in the form of history, on which Professor Linden has his own refreshingly different views.
