I did not find the pictures in the book appealing, as I am well aware that this is a children's book, i still found the illustrations quite annoying. Marcia William's introduction to Greek mythology is wonderfully illustrated and bursting with color, its stories of gods and heroes are fun, like The 12 Tasks of Hercules, and some are genuinely sad, like the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

I also bought the Romans book at the same time but feel that that one is more suited to a slightly older reader of say 7-8 minimum due to the more factual nature, whereas this one could be enjoyed by readers as young as 5 as it is made up of a series of short stories. Marcia Williams' is the author/illustrator of several picture books, including the retellings "The Amazing Story of Noah's Ark"; "Jonah and the Whale"; "Joseph and His Magnificent Coat of Many Colours"; "Don Quixote" and "Sinbad the Sailor", as well as her own texts "When I Was Little" and "Not a Worry in the World". Beautiful book, bought off the back of my son's enjoyment of the King Arthur book by the same author. In this book, you’ll find the stories of Theseus, conqueror of the dreaded Minotaur; the mighty Heracles and his twelve tasks; the tragic lovers Orpheus and Eurydice; Perseus, the Gorgon-slayer; the musician Arion and his rescue by the dolphins; Pandora and her little box of horrors; the feather-clad fliers Daedalus and Icarus; and the weaving contest between Arachne and the goddess Athene. The tale begins on page 24 with King Acrisius packing his wife and child in a chest and setting them adrift on the sea. Evaluation of Literary Elements: Though it may not be the most thorough retelling of these myths, I do think that the comic-book style of these myths would interest a child. Panels and spreads brimming with color, decorative detail, and nonstop action make each tale a pleasure to look at, and speech bubbles add modern humor.

Or Zeus takes revenge on Prometheus, and extinguishes every spark of fire on earth, causing the hungry populace to eat nothing but salad. This former nursery school teacher blends her storytelling skills and humorous illustrations with well-known figures and stories from literature. This is a great resource in the classroom for children to start to understand a topic they may be covering. While the stories are brief, they tend to stick to the major details of the original myths, the basic plot lines are there and the important themes are kept in play.
