There are also a large number of characters to keep track of; and the story of Adam Swann’s rise is less fascinating than the smaller stories within the story. It takes account of the sweeping social and economic turmoil of the Industrial Revolution while bringing individuals to life and capturing the energy of the age in a way that I haven’t felt since Dickens or Gaskell. I imagine this was normal for a man of his time and place, but I found it strange (because I'm not very ambitious myself) and sad at times (because he doesn't get much time at home). I happen to know that this was a significant event in Charles Dickens’ life, so I liked the touch of reality that lent to the situation.

This is a feminist novel for the 1970’s: it has strong, capable women, but they are more than willing to subjugate themselves if they can only find a man who is yet stronger and more capable.p>Read about how we’ll protect and use your data in our Privacy Notice. Much of the book examines (which could be boring to some) the business growth, with some time being spent on his family. I was glad I read it on my Kindle so that I could use the Oxford dictionary as I encountered unfamiliar words and usages. I knocked off a star because I have trouble relating to Adam's driving ambition to make his name in the business world. Maybe after Daniel starts taking a bottle and his grandparents steal him for a weekend I’ll try this book again.

Adam and his family were involved in a horrible train wreck and Adam was unconscious for over a month. The next two years found Adam struggling to keep the business profitable while the war continued in the states.Blubb found out that one of his transports of weapons was being watched by some Irishmen in hopes of stealing them. They all are defined by their British gumption, common sense and basic decency, despite a range of political and socioeconomic backgrounds.

And his theory, when the party finally reaches its conclusion, namely that there is some kind of spiritual something going on here right now, is intriguing. There are too many spoilers to say more, but she has a chance to become much more than simply a stereotypical Victorian woman. Adam Swann resolves to throw his talents into the establishment of a chain of road haulage depots throughout the country, and we read of the fluctuations of the firm and of the individuals who serve it.I have to admit that I skimmed some of these sections, though, because I wanted to get back to the main story and the details got a bit much for me at times.

However, while the detail can occasionally be tiresome, what distinguishes Delderfield’s writing is the sense of time and place. This will perhaps prove to be the north’s greatest folly as it blew it’s best chance at early liberation from the grip of Britain’s “public school mob”rulers. It has been 30 years since my first reading, but I still enjoy their stories and the history of the period. It’s not an easy read by any means, but very captivating and really a requirement for anyone who wants to read more about one of the most important periods in England’s history.

Maybe a British reader would have had fewer problems with these terms, unusual analogies and references? Paul's livelihood, his peace, and his vision of a good and noble way of life in Shallowford are all threatened. Another discussion through the book is the adaptation of both the culture and the business world to the expanding reach of railroads. S. Civil War breaks out, the whole region is affected and Adam puts the wagons to a clever and heartwarming use.
