Description

Quantum mechanics in SF can be rather streamlined and silly, sometimes, but then we get works like this that don't focus so much on descriptions of how it works or any small engineering applications, but instead become a grand world-building exercise of what happens to so many alien species (and human) when they simply want to know why or what a portion of deep space is doing when it goes very wrong. Come fry with me: Virgin Atlantic given green light for first transatlantic flight using fuel made from cooking oil

I could have overlooked the hazy plot if I had liked M. John Harrison’s characters. Unfortunately, and this is my biggest problem with Light, the characters are all, with the exception of one who dies not long after we meet him, completely unlikable. Neil Gaiman warns us in his introduction that we won’t like Michael Kearney, but he doesn’t mention that we won’t like any of the characters. Perhaps it’s shallow to insist on having some character to admire or root for, or maybe it’s simply a reflection of my own optimistic personality, but I know many readers feel the way I do, so I’ll warn them. Sunlight provides the energy that green plants use to create sugars mostly in the form of starches, which release energy into the living things that digest them. This process of photosynthesis provides virtually all the energy used by living things. Some species of animals generate their own light, a process called bioluminescence. For example, fireflies use light to locate mates and vampire squid use it to hide themselves from prey. The Part-M Light opinion has been voted by the EASA Committee as per March 2019. The opinion was originally released by the EASA in 2016, and now, three years later, the implementation process has begun. It will officially be applicable from the 24th of March, 2020. This is one of my favorite passages from Light, the idea of different kinds of star drives some of which are based on principles which are impossible according to known science. I wonder if the idea was inspired by the infinite improbability drive from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In any event, the chaotic conflicting science fits in with the novel’s theme of an incomprehensible universe. Light is M. John Harrison’s highly respected and 2002 novel that blends contemporary human drama with space opera and magical realism and surreal fantasy. Quite a heady brew.
