Description

The Cargo Harbor Set was a birthday gift at our house a few years ago, and we just love the awesome container ship and the lifting bridge. Start with tracks of the same length: To make it easier to connect BigJigs and Brio tracks together, start with tracks that are the same length.

The quality can’t be beat, to the point that my own two negative observations on the NameTrain sets — that the connections are sometimes cut with a little too much puzzle-piece precision, and that the all-wood wheels and axles don’t roll as smoothly as the usual ones made of metal and plastic — are both due to the exceptional craftsmanship and materials used. In my preliminary play tests, I noticed they’re so well made, and cut to such exact precision, that it can be a bit harder to put them together. Chuggington track is just like the Thomas Wooden Railway track that I’ve loved for years, and now that Thomas sets include more plastic, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much difference. Equally the wooden trains themselves also fit and run on all the leading brands of wooden railway, with even the newer battery operated trains able to run up and down each brand of track. The newest and biggest BRIO deluxe set yet — the BRIO Railway World Deluxe Set — includes an airport, a farm, a ferry, a big station, and more. Please note that their train sets only include the trains, so you’ll want to get some wooden tracks to go with them.

I think your idea of getting a used train table is probably your best bet, considering your sons enjoy the trains they already have. Moreover, it's worth noting that both Brio and Hape tracks are also compatible with several other popular brands, such as Ikea, Thomas and Friends, and Melissa and Doug. However, Brio tends to use the more traditional beechwood for their track whilst Bigjigs Rail use rubberwood. Wooden train tracks can be played with in a multitude of new ways — so many ways that I wrote a book about three creative little train tracks inventing “new track tricks. And if you still have trouble with the tracks falling apart too often, I have a post about temporary ways to keep train tracks together on a train table…it’s geared toward wooden trains, but I think some of the solutions would work for Trackmaster tracks as well.

Common wooden train scale options for children's train sets are HO scale, N scale, and O scale sets, each representing different ratios relative to real-size trains. They have a couple of rare track types worth mentioning: 12-inch curve tracks (they form a circle with a 30-inch diameter) and a 12-inch “wiggle track” (similar to the wavy track above, but with more curves). From slings to toys and sustainable living, Baba Me will help you make your parenting journey easier and greener. By that definition, the BRIO Railway Starter Set Train Set is actually quite a bit more than a “starter” set, both in size/scope and in cost.

My son just inherited tons of learning curve Thomas trains from my nephew, however, the tracks are long gone. It also comes with an engine from each of the four lines (well, Harold in the case of the Thomas Wooden Railway inclusion). In general, BigJigs tracks feature plastic connectors that snap together, while Brio tracks use metal connectors that slide together. We are always looking at what is currently on the market and aim to put the latest and most interesting pieces on the site.

If you like the idea of a designated space for your child’s train set, check out our themed Train Tables , set at the perfect height for your tiny train conductor! It’s mostly useable, but I don’t know if this is a quality control problem or just a one-time accident.

Other favourites include our Fairy Train Set , Dinosaur Railway Set , and Farm Train Set - to name a few. Moreover, the sets’ modularity allows for expansion and customization, thereby prolonging their lifespan. ETA: I just noticed that I’d written this years ago and wanted to say for anyone reading through the comments that at this point I don’t recommend purchasing Right Track tracks. Usually, I think of a starter set as a simple circle, oval, or figure-eight of track with an engine, one or two train cars, and a few accessories (trees, small buildings, people or animal figures). Otherwise, we never have used it much with our trains…once in a while as a novelty, it’s been fun, but otherwise the floor is so much easier!
