I’d put that down to being in the right place at the right time.” Derek and I developed a story slate … but an ad hoc editorial board challenged every one of our ideas. Fortunately, I was well prepared. I described each proposed article and how it fitted structurally.’ The issue includes interviews with Marshall McLuhan, Studs Terkel and Marcel Marceau, but Vitiello says that what really ‘sold it’ to Mobil was their ideas for communication at a daily level, with resonant articles about British pubs, French cafés, Japanese baths and Italian passeggiate.Birdsall: ‘All of the corporations did films, wonderful art films that hardly related to their business. So we said that this was cheaper than film, and you could get it to all the top people in an envelope. That’s the great thing about books and magazines. You know if they’re going into the right hands … television is sprayed across everywhere.’ His first major client was the publisher Van Loghum Slaterus. Martens designed cool, geometrical images for covers and left-ranging books, it was also a dead end. This was a period of general crisis for post-1945 Modernism, which by the late 1960s was finding that blind pursuit of the economic miracle and of bureaucratic rationalism was not enough. In keeping with the times, the small firm of Van Loghum Slaterus was incorporated into the large combine of Kluwer. Alan Fletcher is known for his witty and customized visual designs. Derek Birdsall has been a graphic designer since 1934. His passion for art and design rooted from his grandfather and a fountain-pen fetishist. He is also passionate about papers and several writing instruments.Abram Games is one of the most recognized graphic image designers of mid-20th century in Great Britain. One time, my mum was dashing aroundorganising an exhibition of paintings at the centre. When she was finished, it looked great. It opened, but nobody was walking through the door.I knew she was embarrassed for the exhibitors and I asked if she had sorted any publicity? The joy of this book lies in the 50 examples of fine Birdsall books designed during a career which encompasses the sacred and the profane, from the Pirelli calendar to the new Anglican Book of Common Worship. There are some 360 scaled specimen spreads and covers in their original colours, including books on wine, chess, astronomy, architecture, glasshouses, art catalogues, and Monty Python.

Here he is contributing to a documentary on fellow designer Hans Schleger, with his Northern accent still intact. Birdsall's career and fame were built on a variety of designs and commissions. During his long career—among much other work—Birdsall designed Penguin book covers and Pirelli calendars; he art-directed several magazines (including Nova and Mobil Oil's Pegasus; and he designed books for the Yale Center for British Art, the Tate, the V&A and the British Council and designed Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England in 2000. Interestingly, Hepburn was ‘sympathetic to’ feminism at the time, and was simultaneously starting to work for Spare Rib. This brought her up against the Pythons’ notorious blind spot for sexism. ‘There would be images involving flashers, dirty old men, etc., and I wasn’t always comfortable. But we were working too fast to grind any axes.’ She ponders for a moment. ‘Also, I used to feel that often they were doing it with irony, taking a position on the sort of people who might be like that.’
