o It takes a long time to dry on some surfaces – it says 4-6 hours, but was less on the woodstain, and significantly more on the melamine Before painting any surface, it should be free from dirt, grease, rust, dust and loose flakes of old paint. Some require primers and/or undercoats to provide a base suitable for painting ... However, if you don’t want to paint your MDF there are a few alternatives to primer/sealer. Effectively, they do the same job - seal the MDF - but in different ways. If you like the natural look of MDF and want to add some protection you can use a clear varnish - choose matt or gloss - to keep your MDF looking like new. An oil-based varnish is the best choice for this. You apply in much the same way as primer/sealer/paint, with a brush or roller. However, we then like to go a little deeper to explore more detail about the product by looking at products in the same category as Dulux Difficult Surface Primer. That then tells us that there are 736 products in the DIY category at The Range. If you want a good smooth paint finish on your MDF, there isn’t any real alternative to priming or sealing. Medium-density fibreboard is made from small wood fibres such as sawdust and shavings, which are mixed with resin and wax and compressed into panels. It is not fond of water as this can make the board swell. So it needs to be treated - or primed or sealed - before you consider painting it.

Products for more severely damaged surfaces are more closely related to plaster than paint, but for those nor wanting to employ a professional plasterer, there are supposedly "easy to use" options available that are generally non-toxic, with a low-VOC content. Not all are popular on the DIY chat boards, though, and they're not cheap, either ...

Paint over knots with "knotting", otherwise the sap in them will bleed through subsequent coats of paint. Apply wood primer followed by an undercoat (or an all-in-one). Use an oil-based undercoat with oil-based gloss or eggshell paint. Zinsser B-I-N, which let’s be honest you’re going to have in your van anyway. I didn’t test it on oil-based gloss or on melamine, but it did really well on varnish and woodstain. It’s hard to review in a way, as everyone already knows it and there has been so much written about it online, I don’t think there’s anything I can add! Available online here. It is a trade product and his means superior quality to general commercially bought paints and primers Most of the primers I tested did a decent job. I have to say, I was put off Zinsser 1-2-3 Bullseye, and Tikkurila Otex Akva to some extent as they performed less well than the others on melamine specifically in this test, and to be honest, if you can find one primer that will work brilliantly on all surfaces, surely that keeps life simple?! So for now I’ll ignore those two, and concentrate on the ones that performed consistently well in my test:

The key thing to consider here, is how the price of Dulux Difficult Surface Primer compares to others but taking into account the quality and features of Dulux Difficult Surface Primer over the other options. Paint undercoat also protect your walls and surfaces and prepare them for the top coat, providing a neutral base for you to apply any colour, however bold it may be. Primer paint is essential if you're changing a colour scheme from a dark shade to something lighter, helping to show your topcoats true colour while keeping it vibrant for longer. Unpainted metal Use a metal or all-purpose primer followed by gloss, eggshell or emulsion paint. Use an oil-based undercoat under oil-based paints. It is an all in one coating but will take a 2 coats to cover and may be painted over with both solvent and water-based top coats.

When the surface was keyed, all the primers performed significantly better; I’d give both Crown products, Whitsons and Zinsser All-Coat 10 out of 10, but the other two (Otex Akva and Bullseye 1-2-3) still weren’t perfect, a small amount of the primer did scratch off in my test Wood Treated with Ronseal Yacht Varnish

It is worth noting that you can still paint over the sealer if you change your mind, but if you are going to paint, you’ll be better off using a coloured sealer/primer. It has a thin consistency which means that you typically only need one coat to seal your MDF, which will be touch dry within 30 minutes. If it needs another coat you’ll have to wait for a couple of hours before you can apply. The primer is specifically designed to give a bonding surface and undercoat to ready for top coats. MDF Unpainted MDF needs sealing before painting. Use a specialist sealant such as Johnstone's MDF primer followed by an undercoat, before glossing or eggshelling.Application : Brush, short pile roller or spray. STIR THOROUGHLY BEFORE USE. After suitable preparation, apply one coat of Dulux Trade Super Grip Primer, followed by the appropriate Dulux Trade paint system.
