The title of the album is taken from a line in the song " Skateaway" and from the outtake "Making Movies. I've heard the OG US, this MoFi, the MoFi SACD, the 1996 CD, the BG AAA cut from 2010 (same cut as 2014), and the Japanese SACD and the 1980 US is by far the best. I'm inclined to agree with Rolling Stone magazine's assessment that had this record actually been a motion picture, it might have garnered a flock of Academy Awards. Knopfler's songwriting was never as good as this, as the 3 tracks that can be found on side 1 are the best 3 he ever wrote, they make it one of the most perfect album sides ever made. Indeed, the first five tracks – "Tunnel of Love," "Romeo and Juliet," "Skateaway," "Expresso Love," "Hand in Hand" – comprise a mini-suite united by theme, harmony, and spirit.

Everything sounds the same at a certain point, all of these songs start off good but trail off into nothing of note. The lengthy but wonderful "Tunnel of love" has been a stage favorite for a long time, listen to the wonderful repeating 'Girl you look so pretty to me' chorus halfway through.Almost flawless album Amazing vocals, amazing instrumentation, and the lyric writing is truely immaculate here. Iovine had also worked on Springsteen's Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums, and he was instrumental in recruiting E-Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan for the Making Movies sessions. Twisting by the Pool" was released on the ExtendedancEPlay EP on 10 January 1983 and reached the UK Top 20 when released as a single. Tunnel of Love was a little closer for me comparing the two but still have the give the nod to this release. Expansive and cinematic, the aptly titled Making Movies puts a premium on interrelated subjects (love, relationships, heartbreak) and deep-seated emotions that play out in heartfelt lyrics, intense singing, and epic frameworks.

The second single release was " Skateaway," and the third and final single from the album was the lengthy opening track, " Tunnel of Love," with its intro "The Carousel Waltz" by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, which only reached the number 54 position in the UK. Considered by many fans to be the group's most complete album, the 1980 set witnesses leader Mark Knopfler greatly expanding his songwriting palette and setting his storytelling amidst more complex, involving arrangements. Always more about the whole than the sum of their individual parts, Dire Straits demonstrate that while Knopfler is the lynchpin, this record is a true band effort. The song is filled with romantic projections, though in real life most women would run away from a creepy carnival worker hitting on them.Skateaway" is another brilliant song, the only song on which Knopfler really shows us what a great guitar player he is.

It’s not a Mofi 45 or UHQR but it’s as good or better than the 33 ⅓ versions that come from those efforts. He contacted Jimmy Iovine after hearing Iovine's production on the song " Because the Night" by Patti Smith—a song co-written by Smith and Bruce Springsteen.

David appears on video playing "Solid Rock" and "Les Boys" live in concert, but these performances preceded the recording. It appears mine was done at the Toronto plant and have seen decent pressings from there on occasion. With new group members Alan Clark and Hal Lindes on board, Dire Straits embarked on tours of Europe, North America, and Oceania [6] from October 1980 until July 1981 to promote the album. Making Movies is the third studio album by British rock band Dire Straits, released on 17 October 1980 by Vertigo Records internationally, Warner Bros. David Knopfler left Dire Straits in August 1980 during the recording of the album, following heated arguments with his brother [4] and almost immediately after the recording of a BBC2 Arena documentary about the group featuring several individual interviews with the band members. The album starts out with the mini rock opera Tunnel Of Love, which commences with a TV soap opera theme organ that slowly develops into a galloping contagious piano rhythm until it explodes with fierce guitar playing and drums. He seems to be putting Roy Bittan's piano playing in the spotlight instead of his own guitar on most of the other tracks.
