To make a tab and slot joint, in one piece of cardboard cut away the edges so that you form a tab. On the other piece of cardboard, you’ll want to make a slot using your cardboard cutter. Tab and Slot joints are when you use tabs and slots together to join two pieces of cardboard together. Instead of inserting two slots to line up with each other, you simply cut out tabs to fit into the slots. I hope you enjoyed this and/or learned something! Please comment if you have questions or suggestions! If you want to join your cardboard together without using any kind of hardware, folded tab joints are very easy to do just by making a few cuts in your cardboard pieces and then folding the pieces to create tabs. Versatile Applications: Chipboard screws are ideal for a wide range of woodworking projects. Whether you're constructing furniture, cabinets, shelves, or working with chipboard-based structures, these screws provide the strength and stability you need.

You can either glue these folded tabs to the piece of cardboard you want to connect it to, or you can even cut out slots to create a space for the tabs to go through – we call those tab and slot joints and will explain those next! Woodscrews are available in a range of materials such as carbon steel, hardened steel, zinc, stainless steel and solid brass. Brass is usually chosen for its appearance when combined with brass ironmongery such as hinges and door handles. Stainless steel is ideal for areas exposed to moisture, and carbon and hardened steel can be fitted without needing pre-drilled holes. In addition, all wood screw materials have high levels of corrosion resistance. They are available in gauge sizes ranging from 3 to 8mm and lengths from 12 to 300mm. Chipboard screws are engineered with precision to provide exceptional fastening capabilities for soft timbers, MDF, and chipboard. These screws feature a single thread that extends from the base of the head to the tip on smaller sizes. The coarse thread design creates a larger distance between each peak, ensuring enhanced grip and stability. Different paints work differently, and the real differences you want to watch out for are between Matte and Gloss paints. I usually mix the two so that I get a semi-gloss, and this is fine applied directly to the cardboard (for a more rustic or weathered feel/look) or with a base coat (for a newer look). This is also a great opportunity to discuss how the "grain" of cardboard is similar to that of wood - the way it is constructed makes it easier to "cut with the grain" along the corrugated channels, rather than "across the grain" perpendicular to the corrugation. I think this is neat because cardboard is, after all, wood!Get yourself one of those cutting mats. I like my 11x17 but you can get a nice 8.5 x 14 and it can still do the job well. To make a flange tab joint, you simply make several small cuts around the base of a tube and then fold the pieces so that it creates flange. Brad fasteners are commonly used in scrapbooking and binding together documents, but they are also awesome for using with cardboard, especially if you want to create pieces that can move together easily. When choosing the thread, consider the density of the timber. It’s best to use fine threads for hard timber and coarse threads for soft timber.

If you want to use folded tab joints and give them additional strength, it’s usually best to work in several layers of cardboard – so after you create one joint, you will then create another tab joint to overlap that or glue on additional cardboard over the tabs.

Before buying screws, consider the type of project you need them for. Although some are designed for multipurpose use, others are more specialised and are designed for specific applications. Using the right type for the job will ensure they can take the load and stay securely in place. Best for small parts or areas that will need painting, but won't work for edge joints. I don't use this glue much, but I keep it just in case. This method is a bit whimsical, dangerous, and not really accepted as a practical method for cutting cardboard, but man, is it fun! If you have an old, useless soldering iron, or a pyrography kit, this is a great and entertaining way to cut cardboard. Simply heat up your iron, and use it to burn through the cardboard. This is best done outdoors or in a garage, because it will set off fire alarms if you are doing it for a longer period.
