The Sonos Arc draws on Dolby’s latest TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus sound codecs to deliver the best quality lossless audio found on cutting-edge Blu-ray discs and some of the leading streaming services. Crucially, that also includes Dolby Atmos support, and while the reflected height and side channels aren't as pronounced as some of the soundbars here can manage, they're still impressive, and the range of precision of the Arc is superb. We also liked the simple setup, which involved just a couple of steps on the smartphone app, and as you'd expect it's easy to hook it up to otherSonos speakers. The minimalist cable connections and all-in-one system construction add to this no-fuss feeling and streamlined aesthetic – though it's a real shame that there's no HDMI passthrough.

Some manufacturers are introducing these HDMI 2.1 ports as inputs onto their soundbars, so what sets the Sony HT-A7000 apart from the rest here is that the two HDMI 2.1 ports not only passthrough at 4K 120Hz, which is perfect for gaming but, thanks to a firmware update, support VRR and ALLM to get the most of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.Another thing you’ll want to watch out for is the kind of connection you need. You’ll find most modern soundbars have HDMI connectivity, but there's also optical connectivity—so what's the difference? These are two ways that audio is passed from your TV to your soundbar, but HDMI passes high-resolution audio, including Dolby Atmos.

To counter this and keep real-time audio, Orbitsound has installed hi-gain antennas in the soundbar and subwoofer, which has allowed it to reduce the size of the digital transmit and receive buffers. The result is that sound is delayed by less than 10ms, so there are no problems with lip sync. In terms of what is missing, we’d certainly have liked to see HDMI included but equally Bluetooth (specifically with aptX) would have added a welcome wireless audio option. Apple fans will point to AirPlay as well, but given the premium surrounding it the price would’ve taken a significant jump and an AirPort Express unit can still be attached for those unable to live without it.The A70 supports Bluetooth with apt-X for lossless audio streaming, while pairing is made easy by the inclusion of NFC. Orbitsound A70 airSOUND Bar – Operation There are various ways of doing this, but the best option is HDMI. HDMI can transfer both picture and sound, and ARC has been around since 2009. It allows data to flow in both directions, so from the TV to the soundbar and vice versa. The one place that we think that M12 misses out, is not having a dedicated centre channel for speech. By its nature, this is inherently positional and should sound like it’s coming from the TV’s location. Soundbar’s with a centre speaker also sound a little clearer, for our liking, making dialogue easier to understand.

Many of the high-end soundbars in this list also have Dolby Atmos built-in. Again, this isn't technically surround sound, but the audio tech is advanced and creates the illusion of immersive sound by bouncing sounds off the walls and ceiling around you. Are Dolby Atmos soundbars really worth it? Press and hold the button on your soundbar for 3 seconds. The control panel will show lights on the right panel going from left to right. This is an excellent value soundbar. It may not carry the same power and soundstage as the Samsung HW-Q900C, but it's a fraction of the price and the rear optional speakers will certainly add to the already fantastic 5.1.2 channels in the HW-Q800C itself. When you add all that together, it's no surprise that this is the best soundbar for most people. There’s no pseudo-surround sound in the M12 and it uses its spatial stereo technology to fill a room with audio, so that it sounds as though its coming from all around you. It certainly fills the room and gives the impression that what you’re watching is surrounding you. This removes the directionality problems of a traditional soundbar, coming closer to a 5.1 system in terms of immersion. However, a 5.1 system’s directional system works better, as they can create sound effects around, in-front and behind you. However, airSOUND is a more of an acquired taste when playing music. The side drivers tend to over-emphasise treble, which makes percussive instruments like hi-hats and tambourines a little too prominent – and you can’t turn it off either. The Q990C also brings with it a couple of extra unique features, with the main being an update to the Q-Symphony technology. This enables Samsung-compatible soundbars and TVs to communicate (even wirelessly) and work together to use all the available speakers between both systems to create an even bigger, bolder sound – which it succeeds in doing. In terms of design, the HW-Q800C may not be the most visually appealing bar, but there is an attractiveness to it in an almost industrial sense. Although it's heavy compared to to other soundbars, it's a reassuring heaviness that gives it that sense of quality. At 43-inches wide, it fits well exactly with a 50-inch TV and would look great with 55-inch plus sized TVs.
