Description

I once had motorcycle fever, so in 1966 I and a half dozen others founded a motorcycle gang sometimes referred to as a club.

First edition; 8vo (234 x 158 mm, 9¼ x 6¼ in); black-and-white photographs in offset, photographs and text by Danny Lyon, light foxing to preliminary and end pages, occasional light marks, light toning to edges, black cloth-covered boards, titles stamped in silver on spine and rear, light wear to extremities, leaning slightly, grey endpapers, lightly marked, photo-illustrated dust-jacket, printed in black, blue, and orange, small strip of adhesive residue on verso from historic jacket protector, light wear, slight curl and soft creasing to top and bottom edges, a very good copy; ix, [i], 94pp. Danny Lyon, a member of Magnum Photos, documents his experience as a member of the infamous 1960's Chicago motorcycle gang "The Outlaws". Light wear, sunfading on spine, small bit of loss on top and bottom of spine, slight scuffing and bumping on sides of wraps and text block. This 2005 Lucero song (Bikeriders) based on select photos/interviews from Danny Lyon's 1967 book (The Bikeriders) is, likewise, the shared-basis of the opening narration for the 2023 Hollywood film (The Bikeriders).

I always picture the 1950s/1960s in a particular way but these photos could have been taken yesterday.

Minor edge wear, light foxing to cover versos and half-title page, else very good in pictorial wraps. NOTE: All of these books - hardback - softback and paperback are in perfect condition and many are mint - like new! In October 2018, Jeff Nichols revealed he had been thinking about making a biker film set in the 1960s for five years, although he did not at that stage have a script, and mentioned the idea on the set of his short film Long Way Back Home to Michael Shannon, who reportedly told him "You've been talking about that damn idea for so long. The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century pp190-1; The Photobook: A History, I p256; The Open Book pp236-7; Danny Lyon: Message to the Future pp15-21.The Bikeriders is one of the few, if not the only, non-sensationalized books having to do with outlaw motorcycle clubs. On December 8, it was announced that Focus had scheduled the film for a theatrical release in the United States on June 21, 2024.

The journal-size title features original black-and-white photographs and transcribed interviews made from 1963 to 1967, when Danny Lyon was a member of the Outlaws gang. The importance of his work and our interest in the subject is reinforced by Lyon’s immersion in his subject. More a photography book than anything but also has interviews with the people who grace these pages. It was announced in August 2022 that Nichols would also direct the film, with Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy being cast.As with Lyon's other publications, text is an integral part of THE BIKERIDERS; stories from the photographer as well as the voices of a number of bikeriders situate the photographs within the context of the biker subculture and the culture at large. With a preface for the new edition and the introduction to the 1968 edition by Danny Lyon as well as narratives describing the bikers' life on trips throughout he Midwest and the Southern States of America. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Norman Reedus, and Tom Hardy.

You want to see just what its like just step out into a nice big old fat ocean all by yourself in a little rowboat and see just how microscopic you are. It was just cool to see and read real people's lives and accounts of things that they've been through. Wish so much of the book wasn't taken up with interviews of the bikers, forming a loose history of the scene. Often compared to Robert Franks' "The Americans" or Larry Clark's "Tulsa" for its' grit and immersion in the subject, Danny Lyon’s book of photography was sort of a companion piece to Hunter Thompson's "Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga" - firsthand New Journalism reporting about life on "The Edge", seemingly casual but with a whiff of latent violence in every breath, ready to catch a spark and ignite. The first printing of this new edition of The Bikeriders is limited to 3,850 case bound copies and a special slipcased edition of 150 autographed copies. His many books include The Movement (1964), The Destruction of Lower Manhattan (1969), Conversations with the Dead (1971), Knave of Hearts (1999), Like a Thief’s Dream (2007), and Deep Sea Diver (2011).
