Considering these are plant-powered bars, I knew that I needed to adjust my expectations going into this review. Generally speaking, plant-based protein bars don’t taste quite as good as their dairy-based counterparts. Being 100% vegan, low sugar, and high protein, I have to admit that my expectations for the cereal going into this review were extremely low. Misfits is a very popular brand overseas, and they’re doing their best to break into the US market now as well. CEREALSY GOOD TASTING CEREAL - We do things a little different at Misfits. We wanted to take a classic breakfast food and think outside the (cereal) box. We have created two delicious flavours ready for you to try, with more suprises on the way. I suppose that’s why they don’t list the cup measurement alongside the weight measurement on this one.

However, trying this cereal dry was very disappointing. Yes, you taste some chocolate, but it’s closer to the flavor of chocolate protein powder than it is actual cocoa powder.

If you’re unfamiliar with Misfits, they started selling these plant-based protein bars in 2020, and they’ve exploded onto the scene with very high praise. I’ve been reviewing protein bars long enough to know that the bars won’t actually look like that, but that is just too enticing to pass up. An overwhelming number of food products that claim to be healthy are made with artificial sweeteners – this means brands can make claims about a cereal being low-sugar whilst still tasting sweet. However, regular consumption of artificial sweeteners has been linked to changes in the gut microbiome and they are something I advise my clients to actively avoid. At the same time, look out for real sugar on an ingredients label, which can be disguised as cane juice, dextrose, isoglucose, jaggery, maltose and barley malt.” – Clarissa Watch Out For Wheat The chocolate Misfits cereal is one of the best-smelling foods my nose has ever had the privilege of sniffing.

The NPD – which would not only target breakfastbut also midday and evening occasions – replicated “the sugary and non-nutritious cereal brands in the market, without the actual junk”, said Misfits. It had been created to target “mainly millennials and gen Z” shoppers who loved cereal but were “concerned about their health and what they consume”, the brand added. VEGAN, NATURAL AND GLUTEN FREE - This cereal is certified by the vegan society. Dairy free, gluten free and completely natural. Misfits are proudly carbon neutral and we are palm oil free. Helping you find your inner feel good. With 150 calories per serving along with 14g of protein, it’s the highest protein plant-based cereal I’ve come across. The chocolate Misfits cereal definitely improves in milk, but not substantially. That bitter aftertaste is almost completely eliminated when eaten with milk, which is awesome, but the overall chocolate flavor is still very much subpar. SOYA Protein Isolate, Tapioca Starch, Inulin (Chicory Root Fibre), Coconut Oil, Cocoa Powder, Natural Flavourings, Salt, Sweetener: Sucralose. ( Soya )

I had heard amazing things about their protein bars, but as a lover of cereal, I needed to give their protein cereal a try first. The fact that this is not touted as a keto-friendly cereal is also appealing to me because I tend to enjoy products more when they have carbs to them. Granted, there is very little sugar and it is overall low in carbs, but it’s a bit more appealing to me than a keto cereal.

Misfits co-founder Henry Sether said the NPD and rebrand would “widen our brand appeal and allow us to branch out into more categories and territories, cementing ourselves as a leading innovator in the plant-based functional food space across the globe”. Cereals like Weetabix and All Bran are wheat-based, which may seem like a healthy option, but wheat can irritate the gut and cause bloating. These big-brand cereals also all contain sugar. At the same time, wheat bran contains phytic acid (a natural substance found in wheat), which can prevent the absorption of certain nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron. If you enjoy these cereals, enjoy them sparingly and in small amounts.” – Kate Delmar-Morgan, nutritional therapist at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition Choose Granola Wisely They are vegan, low in sugar and gluten-free. Each 40g serving provides 14g protein and weighs in at under 150 calories. When I measured out a serving, I did realize that 40g of cereal is rather small. While that’s a typical serving size for cereal, since this one is so dense and compact, that 40g equates to very little volume. When you open the box, it smells like you just stepped into a bakery where all they bake are chocolate donuts topped with chocolate frosting.
