Ivona Tau says: "It's incredible to see global brands like Johnnie Walker investing in digital creators to bring visibility to our work. I am proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Johnnie Walker and share my artistic vision of this limited-edition whisky release with communities in Web3."

Johnnie Walker’s Blue Label Ghost and Rare series continues its run with a new special release, this one built to showcase the grain whisky produced at Port Dundas, an iconic distillery in Glasgow that operated from 1811 to 2010. Port Dundas whiskies remain some of the oldest I’ve ever had the luxury of experiencing in person, in large part because grain whisky can be made cheaply and has enormous “staying power” in the barrel. Nestled among all of those aging casks are a number of whiskies from distilleries that are no longer with us, but their spirits remain. Dad jokes aside, these “Ghost” whiskies are understandably some of the most intriguing and sought after expressions. This leads us to Limited Edition Expressions. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and has released four such limited editions so far and have included Ghost whiskies from Brora, Port Ellen, and Glenury Royal. The most recent release features Pittyvaich as the starring “ghost.”

The Jonnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare series continues with this fourth installment, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich. As with the prior Ghost and Rare releases, this limited edition is blended with “irreplaceable ‘ghost whiskies’ from Scotch whisky distilleries that have long since closed.” The centerpiece of this one is Speyside’s Pittyvaich, which closed its doors in 1993. The two other “ghost whiskies” in this particularexpression are Caledonian and Carsebridge, which balance out Port Ellen’s peaty and saline intensity. In addition to all that, five rare malts join the blend to round out the notes, flavors, mouthfeel, and finish: Mortlach, Dailuaine, Cragganmore, Blair Athol, and Oban—all of them at least 20 years old. Its incredible character inspired us to create something truly extraordinary that pays proper tribute to the whisky makers of this storied Glasgow distillery.” The Master Sets include a physical one-litre bottle, signed by master blender Walker, and an NFT version (digital version) of the bottle. The set also comes with a digital art piece by AI artist and photographer Ivona Tau. This whisky also marks the first Ghost and Rare expression from Johnnie Walker master blender Dr Emma Walker, who took over from Dr Jim Beveridge OBE who retired earlier this year.

Built in 1811, Port Dundas became a whisky blending powerhouse known for its distinctive sweet and delicate grain character before it closed in 2010. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge said: “We have waited patiently for the perfect moment to showcase this rare gem of the whisky world. Pittyvaich may only have thrived for a short period, but the whisky laid down by this distillery is something unmistakable. Its distinct autumnal character has always intrigued us and fired our imagination to create something really special that would pay tribute to the whisky makers of this Speyside distillery.” The expression includes a blend of Port Dundas and two other “ghost” whiskies, a term used to describe extremely rare Scotch, from the distilleries in Cambus and Brora. These three ultra-rare whiskies are combined with five others from Cameronbridge, Glenkinchie, Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk. The combination results in a well-rounded and creamy final product, the brand writes.

Nose: Honeycomb and propolis at a medium approach. Green apple is very apparent with a closer inhale. Some peach and pear notes make a presence at a second inspection. Similar to standing in an orchard in early fall. Wood, vanilla, and soft smoke notes are abundant in this year’s release. The prominence of Port Dundas whisky in the blend pays homage to the Glasgow icon. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich (image via Johnnie Walker) Tasting Notes: Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost And Rare Pittyvaich During my tasting (via a tasting kit), Ghost and Rare Port Ellen starts out closer to thetraditionalBlue Label, which is slightly smoky to begin with. It’s evident that the second expression is in keeping with the Blue Label DNA—just sweeter on the nose, reminiscent of vanilla. But as you progress a few sips further, you’ll begin to notice the distinct Port Ellen peatiness intensify (but not too much) on the palate. And the sweet roundness of vanilla bean highlighted by citrus notes will begin to emerge as well. Remember, though, that these flavors don’t show themselves until minutes after your first sip. It’s a Scotch that takes its time to unfold: Even its medium-light viscosity shows itself not during your first three sips, but a good while into the dram. S cotland has four. Adding all of that up, carrying the remainder and showing your work, gives us 20 million casks waiting for just the right moment to be bottled and enjoyed. Of those 20 million casks, 10 million of them will become Johnnie Walkers.

Their slow maturation allows the sweet and delicate Grain character to blossom,” Emma says. “These rare whiskies highlight the distillery character of Port Dundas, perfectly showcasing the wonderful depth of flavor that this Grain Whisky brings to Johnnie Walker Blue Label. It’s incredible character inspired us to create something truly extraordinary that pays proper tribute to the whisky makers of this storied Glasgow distillery.”
