When it comes to traditional bladed pedestal fans, you'll struggle to find any better looking than those from Boneco. Hailing from Switzerland, the heartland we think of most for its horological leanings, the F220 floor-standing fan has the same Bauhaus aesthetics as a minimalist watch, which will slot in unobtrusively to any clean, modern interior. But like any good Swiss watch, there's plenty more to it than its dashing looks. The Boneco F220 has been primed for high air circulation. Though the head isn't motorised, it does an excellent job of pushing air around rooms of any size with its deep-cut blades that operate within four-speed settings. Rotating 270 degrees, it offers a directional breeze, but when pointed up towards the ceiling will provide an “air shower”, which has all the perks of air conditioning without any of the skin-drying effects. It’s lightweight and easy to carry, with the upright pole stand doubling up as a handy carry handle to find the best spot. The bods at Meaco are clearly on a roll at the moment because this is by no means the only great fan in its armoury – we look at in detail at three more of their fans below. However, if you want a smaller desk fan to waft you as you work, there are plenty of other options available for a much more affordable price tag, with ultra-quiet blades, adjustable angles and long cables so you can move them around as needed. Some might also be smart-focused fans with Wi-Fi connectivity, smart voice assistants or the ability to connect to your phone so you can set the temperature as you fire off texts. Which type of fan is best: pedestal fan or tower fan?

Small enough to sit on a bedside table, side table or windowsill, the MeacoFan 360 is beautifully designed, unobtrusive and easy to use. Simple touch switches control the power levels and you can manually adjust the vertical angle, helping you to find the perfect cooling option. Powered by either mains or USB connection, you can take the fan anywhere inside or outside. Pedestal fans are your bread and butter type, with a rotating, circular set of blades sat on an adjustable stand that oscillates air around the room. These are often more affordable, though they will be a little bit noisier. There's also the issue of plastic spinning blades simply pushing warm air at you rather than regulating the temperature, though many brands opt to use higher-quality material, turbo modes and oscillation to combat the problem. There’s a neat LCD screen on the front that shows the setting as you tap buttons, but it shows the ambient temperature otherwise. It’s not overly bright and, when you turn the fan off, the screen dims further. It’s a shame that you can’t turn the screen off completely, as you can on other MeacoFan models: the option to do this on other MeacoFan models tends to be on the remote control, which you don’t get here. MeacoFan 360 Performance – Exceptionally powerful for such a small modelWith its compact dimensions and a comparatively small installation surface the table fan TVE 100 can be placed on almost any desk. But it also creates a powerful breeze when it’s standing freely in the room, not only impressing by its high air flow rate of up to 1,200 m³/h and its refreshing effect. Three operating modes for every mood and time of day All Meaco products come with a two-year parts and labour warranty, as well as the option of extending the warranty to a total of five years. The intelligent TVE 100memorises what is good for you. In the especially economical standby mode, all device settings remain saved. If the fan is switched on again after a break, it will start up in the previously selected operating mode at the corresponding fan stage.

For our money, though, nothing cools the body quite like a water-based air cooler. These appliances are cheaper than portable air-con systems and are a lot more energy efficient. It's also a very handy fan, mustering up a decent breeze, but remaining quiet up to about the 60 percent power setting. At higher speeds, there is a bit of a whoosh, as you'd imagine. Turning up the speed also increases air purifying power, but there's also an Auto mode that reacts to potent guffs of microparticles and gases.
