Misleading blurb aside, another element of Practical Magic I loved was the writing itself. Hoffman’s writing is just atmospheric and mesmerizing– vivid and lyrical – but without being overdone or overly wordy. The writing doesn’t move at a fast pace, but the sentences just glide from one to the next, smooth as silk. As I was reading this story, I kept wondering if she has ever written any poetry because if so, I’d certainly love to read it. I’m sure it’s absolutely beautiful. Below are a few sample lines from Practical Magic: Summary: Practical Magic was the first book published in the Practical Magic series, and it dives deep into the characters of two particular Owens women, orphaned sisters Gillian and Sally. Their family has been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their small Massachusetts for generations, and their quirky aunts encourage witchery. But, Jet is not the only one in danger. A frantic attempt to save a young man’s life causes three generations of Owens women, and one long-lost brother, to attempt to break the Owens family curse as they travel from Paris to London to the English countryside, where their ancestor Maria Owens first practiced their “Unnamed Art.” A] delicious fantasy of witchcraft and love in a world where gardens smell of lemon verbena and happy endings are possible’ Cosmopolitan Design". Though this Victorian house looks as if it's been in place for a century, it's actually an architectural shell.

Goodreads Synopsis: The bestselling author of Second Nature, Illumination Night and Turtle Moon now offers her most fascinating and tantalizingly accomplished novel yet — a winning tale that amply confirms Alice Hoffman’s reputation not only as a genius of the vivid scene and unforgettable character but as one of America’s most captivating storytellers. Reading an Alice Hoffman book is like falling into a deep dream where senses are heightened and love reigns supreme… I never wanted to awaken’ Jodi PicoultDark comedy and a light touch carry the story along to a truly Gothic climax, complete with heaving skies and witchery on the lawn’ New York Times While Antonia has their aunt's boldness, Kylie inherited their mother Sally's sensitivity, having often cried as a baby and child. Practical Magic: A Victorian House Fit for a Witch". Hooked. 25 October 2009 . Retrieved 31 October 2012. It looks like a real house that was built in the 1850s, but it's really just an "architectural shell" that took 8 months to build and was (sadly) destroyed after filming was over. Regardless of what anyone chooses to call these books, one cannot deny Practical Magic’s persisting popularity. The first novel in the series was published in 1995 to great fanfare. Its sequel took more than two decades to finally see the light of day, and yet Alice Hoffman’s fans were no less enthusiastic to return to the world that the first Practical Magic novel introduced. Sally’s daughters are younger and sweeter, and a bit more of an innocent addition to the story and Sally and Gillian themselves are closer and more connected. The stress and strain from the book isn’t as consuming in the movie though they still have their problems. Some stories begin at the beginning and others begin at the end, but all the best stories begin in a library. Caprice Benedetti as Maria Owens, the first witch in the Owens family and the one who casts the spell that curses all her descendants.

Nyman said that he regrets the fact that his music exists on the album because it limits people's exposure to his work, but does appreciate that, at the very least, it proves his involvement in the film. Alice Hoffman is an American author born in 1952 in New York City. She attended Valley Steam North High and Adelphi University. She wrote her first short story while studying at Stanford. The short story got the attention of an editor, who asked her to write a full-length novel. When Maria is abandoned by him after he impregnates her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts, where he is a judge in the witch trials. En route, she falls for the kind Jewish sailor. All Gillian and Sally ever wanted was to get away. Of all the rules that Susanna has set for her kids, her restrictions on love are the most important. Aura perception: Kylie is able to see the auras of other living beings, such as humans and the lilacs that grew out of Jimmy's body and surrounding their house.

Sally’s love interest is also very nice, and if you ask Ruby, she’ll tell you all about his amazingness. It’s truly worth asking her and hearing lol. I loved the spooky vibe from the very beginning of this! It was so interesting to see the differences between this and the film adaptation. While the movie was set in that gorgeous house in a small town, the book was actually set in the suburbs in Sally’s house. To an extent, Sally and Gillian’s neighbors couldn’t be blamed for their hostile reactions, because their aunts did nothing to dissuade suggestions that they were witches. If anything, they encouraged this talk. Sally and Gillian suffered the consequences and so after a while, they decided that they would escape the family name and all the rumors that came with it. I think it’s because it feels more plot-driven, and I prefer character-driven books. Composer Michael Nyman said he wrote an entire score for "Practical Magic" that was not used in the movie — instead, the studio chose a score by Alan Silvestri.
