Description

Personally, I can relate to that on how obsessed I can be with books and some comfort animes that I took pleasure watching day by day.

And just like how I felt about that book, I thought this was interesting but somewhat underwhelming. Idol, Burning is a window into the world of teenage obsession and the dark places it can venture to . A really fascinating and empathetic look at mental health and fan culture and how those two things can become deeply intertwined. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In a way, this is a book about an abused man and a woman with severe mental health issues, both of them struggling to gain agency over their own lives: In the subtext, the de-humanizing system of idol culture and how it affects Masaki are revealed; Akari is both exploited financially by the entertainment company that employs Masaki and she contributes to his exploitation as a projection surface. Hugely recommended if you've ever been a teenage girl wildly obsessed by a band or a person, Idol, Burning is a fascinating read. This novella is a fascinating deep dive into Fandom culture - Akari is 16 and totally devoted to her idol, Masaki, a performer in the band Maza Maza.

Whilst Akari's obsession is unhealthy at certain times, it also shows how hobbies like these had helped saved lives too. I really related to this book having been a depressed Koreaboo / k-pop stan in my high school / college years. Akari is a rather empty character, a blank slate, which may as well be intentional given how easily she becomes obsessed with the life of another. Ha sido un descubrimiento muy interesante, a pesar de que pueda parecer un libro muy sencillo e infantil.Still, besides her "merch acquisition syndrome" costing ridiculous amounts of money, she is quite harmless, while she Manages the bare minimum of being human. Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. Thank you to Netgalley and HarperVia for the advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest review. That aside, it didn't feel like a wholly satisfying novel and I finished feeling like I wanted something a bit more from the narrative. Her debut novel Kaka, published in 2019, received the Yukio Mishima Prize, making her the youngest recipient in the award's history.
