Description

Dow’s Fine Tawny is a three-year-old blend aged in small oak casks at our lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port shows a lovely bouquet of red fruits and spicy aromas and the palate is full of jammy red fruit and notes of spices, mint and chocolate.

The grapes are normally extremely ripe at the time of picking, a direct result of the low-lying position of the main vineyard. Racking is the process by which the Dow’s team of experienced lodge men will carefully draw the wine off its ‘lees’ (the natural sediment that is formed at the bottom of the cask) and then pour the wine back into the clean cask. The nose is just beginning to evolve into musky, dried plum and raisin aromas with whiffs of tree bark, nutmeg, cumin and cloves. These are backed by ripe black fruits, a good balance between sweet and dry, with a good shot of acidity. A superb port from a top, top vintage which has certainly continued to improve over the last forty nine years.

The whole Bomfim vineyard is ‘A-rated’, the highest quality grading conferred by the region’s wine regulatory body. This wine has a cork closure and, like many wines on our list, this wine is suitable for vegan diets. This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity.Very few Ports can age for 30 long years and still show the complexity and flavours that can be found in Dow’s Thirty Year Old. A very fine Port to be savoured in a reasonable sized glass so that the aromas and colour can be appreciated. There was plenty of beneficial rainfall early in 2020 but also plenty of heat which has given exceptionally low yields. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Dow’s Vintage Ports have been landmark wines in virtually every great year, consistently setting the standards amongst all Port houses.

This famous Port house's best vineyard makes great wines with distinctive aromas of mint and violet with intense concentration and fine peppery tannins. The Dow's Port company has been producing fine port for over 200 years, and during that time, they have built a reputation for excellence and quality. As with Quinta do Bomfim, the best Ports from Senhora de Ribeira are used to make Dow’s Vintage Ports in the great and rare ‘Declared’ years.

Quinta do Bomfim 2006 Vintage Port shows a lovely bouquet of red fruits and spicy aromas and the palate is full of jammy red fruit and notes of spices, mint and chocolate.

Dow’s Port is one of the most famous names in the Port trade and today is owned and managed by the fifth generation of the Symington family. In the good year’s when Dow’s does not ‘declare’ a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. The property’s location offers the perfect balance between the harsh extremes of the eastern end of the valley and the overly rich soils and abundant rainfall of the lower Douro. Generations of Symington winemakers have worked at the Dow's vineyards: Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, creating from them Dow's superbly concentrated wines that are intense and tannic when young, maturing towards a superlative racy elegance with age and scented with violet and mint aromas.
