About this deal

Well yes apparently since with a mild expletive of amazement I discovered that the Donmar Warehouse were planning to transform the work into a sound installation. Subsequently, it was adapted for film and very recently for theatre showing at the Donmar Warehouse, London and starring Juliet Stevenson in their first post-lockdown piece of work. Several of the other main characters had been visiting the doctor's office when the epidemic begins to spread. An absorbing tale of murder, intrigue and revenge, this debut historical novel depicts Brazil under Portuguese colonial rule as a hotbed of vice, corruption and misery. Faced with starvation, internees battle each other and burn down the asylum, only to discover that the army has abandoned the asylum, after which the protagonists join the throngs of nearly helpless blind people outside who wander the devastated city and fight one another to survive.

Few definite identifiers of culture are given, which contributes an element of timelessness and universality to the novel. I believe the book brings forward our fear/avoidance to see our mortality and the insignificance of our lives.s Nobel Prize winner for Literature, José Saramoga, has, with his astonishing and superb story Blindness , written one of the finest European novels of the last 20 or 30 years. The first part of the novel follows the experiences of the central characters in the filthy, overcrowded asylum where they and other blind people have been quarantined. We can all say what we would be capable of doing and not capable of doing when we are sitting in a bar casually munching on free peanuts and pretzels between pints of beer. She is the one who makes some of the hardest decisions which take an emotional toll on her, and it's she who bonds with the dog of tears, an image of compassion and empathy that is, significantly?

For me there were too many miraculous occurrences in it, which kind of destroyed the credibility at times ,but all told I'd give it a thumbs up and recommend it for those with an interest in modern fiction. And if they did so, then resent those who could see and instead of relying on the few sighted people for help despise them for the obvious power they have.
