Almost all of the reviews on Board Game Quest are from review copies of a game provided by the publisher. In the interest of full disclosure, I invested an unhealthy amount of hours in Civilization II and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri in front of my screen back in the day, I have not however dabbled as extensively into the PC game's latter iterations. Still, when boardgame implementations appeared – first Through the Ages, then Sid Meier’s Civilization: The Board Game and lastly Civilization: A New Dawn – I of course immediately jumped to them too.

Rule the world and build an empire to withstand the test of time in Sid Meier’s Civilization: A New Dawn! If you got a barbarian problem, then an Encampment is your answer since they eliminate rival pieces every few turns like some sentient bug zapper.

The map is created using hex boards, which seem to be a popular choice with game designers at present and with good reason, allowing multiple ways to build the terrain.

There are only five of these cards in the game, and three are selected randomly to determine the game end conditions, although players can use four Victory Cards for a slightly longer game. With those of you who are not familiar, well inside comes a bunch of cardboard sheets to punch out the numerous, numerous tokens and game tiles. This one probably won’t make it out to the table very often honestly as I feel it’s rather dry when compared to a bunch of my other more heavily thematic games.

This new expansion is packed full of content to push the boundaries of your civilization in every game. Sid Meier’s Civilization: A New Dawn does precisely that, but in the process, it abstracts away many thematic elements of civilization building to achieve the goal. Finally military allows you to reinforce previously laid control tokens or attack barbarians or a rival player who is within range. Agendas are detailed on victory cards, three of which are drawn during set up ( plus two additional with expansion). Economy focus cards allow a player to interact with city-states and rival cities by moving caravans.
