About this deal

The Convent of the Blessed Limit where it's hoped the nuns' strict methods will curb her bad behaviour, being sent to the Bandolini Finishing School in Venice, a three-month sentence in Dartmoor Prison, from all these punishments Marmalade remains impervious to discipline.

One of the books was 'Marmalade Atkins in Space', which had a cover photo of her in a spaceship cabin with a couple of astronauts. Based on Frederick Grice's 1969 novel, The Courage of Andy Robson, about a young boy who is uprooted from his life in the pit community of Easington, in 1910, when his father is killed in a mining accident. I do want to learn and I try quite hard but that's mostly because, although I enjoy going there, I'm not very good at it.Michael's Primary School, Highgate, London and wore lots of funny ties and shoes every day and was expelled from high school for smoking and drinking. During the course of this series Marmalade becomes a spy for MI7, she is enlisted in the army, she joins the crew of the Grotty Shark where she persuades her scurvy shipmates to mutiny, and destroys the Mona Lisa, before being sent to art school to study under the legendary Salvador Barmy. Educating Marmalade was one of my favourite children's programmes that aired back in 1981 - I remember getting a Marmalade Atkins Annual. Charlotte Coleman, in character as Marmalade Atkins, also had a stint as the Children's ITV presenter during April 1983. For some reason, our town library in the early 90s had a lot of novelisations of long-gone media properties - the original Grange Hill novels, Gregory's Girl, Lizzie Dripping and Marmalade Atkins. Marmalade Atkins can be described as the worst girl in the world, and every edition began with a “bad girl warning”.A number of guest stars were also cast to type, so you got Z Cars / Softly Softly favourites Stratford Johns and Windsor Davies as two hard-nosed cops, Windsor Davies as an army sergeant major. From Eton to the Convent of the Blessed Limit to Dartmoor, Marmalade remains impervious to discipline - to the constant despair of her parents, hapless social worker Mrs Allgood, and child psychologist Dr Glenfiddick.

Not long after I started doing this blog, someone contacted me and asked if I was planning to review Educating Marmalade. For the second series, Danger: Marmalade at Work, the bad girl was sent on a succession of work experience schemes by the wet liberal social worker Wendy Wooley.

I suppose I do get into a bit of trouble at school but that's mostly because, although I enjoy going there, I'm not very good at it. As for Marmalade’s mother, she is not particularly fond of her husband or her daughter and is far more content in spending his money at Harrod’s, where she will purchase whatever expensive items she thinks will annoy Mr Atkins. Coleman portrayed the character of the teenage Lorna in Our Own Kind ( Roy MacGregor), at the Bush Theatre in London (April 1991). For this series, Marmalade had now left school and had a new social worker who was Wendy Wooley after Mrs Allgood had finally had enough. For the role, she had to choose a stuffed toy for Emma to carry; she named it "Haggis" and still had it when interviewed in 1990.
