From an evolutionary point of view, humans leaving vulnerable infants in strange locations with strange people is surely anything but normal? I’d have probably enjoyed it a lot more had Ellie just shared HER account of motherhood, from pre-conception to present day, where the book ends with her and her husband unsure whether they’d like a second child. TV documentary maker Simon Reeve has dodged bullets on frontlines, hunted with the Bushmen of the Kalahari, dived with manta rays, seals and sharks, survived malaria, walked through minefields, tracked lions on foot, been taught to fish by the President of Moldova, and detained for spying by the KGB. Going into the book I did think it might meditate a little more on the decision to have children itself, not just in the beginning stages but throughout. Even at the worst of my initial nursery anxiety, I have always tried to bat away the temptation to be drawn into the ‘mum guilt’ narrative that I despise.
