At first blast, Fracas is sweet—but not cheap or candy-sweet like the mass perfumes of the last two decades. It is a symphony of buttery, creamy white, even though there are things that cut through the richness, like the green vetiver and the airy, spring-like, green lily-of-the-valley and hyacinth.

It becomes slightly mossy and musky as it fades, with a hint of sweet amber emerging as it becomes a skin scent. It took a certain amount of time to completely re-orchestrate the scent, and finally to relaunch it, in 1998, with the prestigious label of the " original Fracas formula, certified by Givaudan". Clarification: this post and piece is about vintage Fracas, both the very original versions and late 1990s Fracas, not the horribly mangled, modern reformulations. The fragrance comes out in a gentle mist that starts off with a touch of peach and orange blossom for bubblegum sweetness, with a touch of cool iris-like hyacinth.

I think our body chemistry is such that it can turn the most masculine of scents into something “feminine” on occasion — especially with those richer or spicier perfumes that have warmth at their base with things like vanilla, tonka bean, amber or sandalwood.
