About this deal

You unfortunately won’t find a kickstand to stabilise the carrier - something you’ll generally see on a lot of other backpack carriers. I found the lack of a kickstand meant that it wasn’t quite as stable as I’d like when loading and unloading my daughter. The top two points are attached to the shoulder straps, and the bottom three points buckle out on each of the carrier, and at the front. Instead, the main frame has a relatively wide base, making this a freestanding carrier, while stability is achieved by the adult putting the weight of their foot onto an anchor point at the base of the unit. I love that you can also change the height and angle that our son is at to make it super comfortable for him.

We found the carrier was getting small before our little one was 3, but this was mainly due that he was getting a lot heavier and we wanted to encourage him walking from a young age and not get used to the free ride!Handily, the left hip belt includes a rear view mirror so that you can keep an eye on your tot while on the move. The carrier is also fully adjustable like a good rucksack, with adjustable shoulder, waist and chest straps. A backpack carrier can be a very useful travel accessory for family holidays abroad, but you’ll need to take the Cross Country S4 through the airport and leave it at the plane door if you want to take it with you on your travels as it’s too large for an overhead locker. The handle behind the shoulder straps a good handhold for hoisting the carrier (with the little one in) up and onto my back. My daughter initially didn’t like being hoisted onto mine or my husband’s back when in the seat as she felt unstable, particularly while we were just getting to grips with the carrier (a kickstand would have made it feel more stable), but she soon got used to this after a couple of outings and generally enjoyed her time spent in it.

    • Weight: 2. Storage is a real strength, though there’s only one large compartment, so I’d often have to fish around a little for what I needed. We live in the countryside and often visit family in Cornwall so it really has stood the test in terms of off-road use and durability. It’s almost as if it was a bit of an afterthought once the design of the main unit had been finished.

In my experience, older children tend to find this irritating and restrictive, but it is certainly helpful for protecting babies and sleeping children on a sunny walk. The Freedom S4 also uses an adjustable airflow back system which keeps the main pack away from your back while you're walking. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. There is a 13″ height difference between my husband and me (6’6″ and 5’5″ respectively), and this carrier adjusts to fit us both well, which is impressive! It is incredibly comfy for both parties and is breathable so it's been fantastic to use over the summer months.

Four years on, we are still using this carrier frequently with younger siblings, and would highly recommend it.
