About this deal

It was the abode of William the 4th Baron Byron – a popular and successful composer and artist – and his teenage wife Frances.

Each chapter is named after a feature of the building or grounds, and the family’s decline is told alongside the decline of the Abbey itself, which had fallen into disrepair by the time William died. Brand has done an excellent job of placing the sexploits of the Byron family into the context of a broader social and political history .In this luscious slice of popular history, Emily Brand knits together all the naughtiest Byrons of the Georgian period into a glittering family tapestry . Her book The Fall of the House of Byron (John Murray, 2020) is a sweeping history of the 18th century through the eyes of one notorious family. At the beginning of each chapter, for example, there are short narrative passages - perhaps recounting Isabella’s passionate feelings for her lover or evoking a storm at sea - which have an almost cinematic quality to them.

A compelling story of a prominent and controversial characters, it is a sumptuous family portrait and an electrifying work of social history. Rather, Brand’s story brings to the forefront a series of eccentric and fascinating figures who each have their own remarkable stories, but who have perhaps since been eclipsed by the reputation of their more famous descendant. She is also a gifted storyteller, employing a variety of devices familiar from fiction which keep the reader’s attention and form a compelling story. If you would like to say hello or ask about Emily's existing work, and for enquiries about public talks or consulting, please use the form below.

Emily previously worked as a senior editor of academic history, trade history and classic literature for the University of Oxford. I qualified as a primary school teacher in 2003 and then worked at Horniman Primary school for the next 13 years. But only a few decades later, at the end of the century, the building had become a crumbling and ill-cared-for ruin. Her new book The Fall of the House of Byron, her first substantial work of narrative non-fiction, is due for publication by John Murray in April 2020. In 2021 she contributed alongside historians including Simon Schama and Bettany Hughes to What is History, Now?

Following the fates of the poet's ancestors over three generations, it is a saga that begins in rural Nottinghamshire and plays out in the gentlemen's clubs of Georgian London, amid tempests on far-flung seas, and in the glamour of pre-revolutionary France.
