It seems like this must be one of those things that shows up repeatedly in cryptics, but if so I’ve never seen it (or, just as likely, have seen it and forgotten). Although Joseph has always been a popular name, it's never had the the same degree of ubiqitty in the English-speaking world as John or William. I did find quite a few clues that were a bit loose with the “rules” of cryptic clues as I understand them: either the definition wasn’t quite accurate, or the cryptic grammar wasn’t quite right. Sunday 21st January 2024: 'Theatrical farce no one gets rid of (though second character cut) (6,3)'. com is not affiliated with SCRABBLE®, Mattel®, Spear®, Hasbro®, Zynga® with Friends, "Wordle" by NYTimes in any way.

I could not understand the symbol in 1a and could barely read it on my small phone screen, so that did not help me. This satisfying new collection, published as the crossword celebrates its 80th anniversary, gathers together 100 of the best puzzles in the series. If I saw any one of those clues in a daily puzzle in the Guardian, I might raise an eyebrow, but I wouldn’t think there was anything seriously wrong. Like flashling, I’m not thrilled by the imprecise use of “hearts” in 4dn — I would expect that to mean the centermost parts of the words, leading to UNHIG.To build an easy to find question title simply select the paper and quiz, enter the quiz number if relevant and fill in the Publication Date. The answer to this is DECAMETRE (defined by `11 yards’) and clearly intended to be a soundalike (homophone) for DECK A METER (Adorn a device for measuring…).

Everyman 4029 23a Bizarrely, some cheer tabloid (a number) (4,5,3,3) I thought it might be an anagram but perhaps not. I can imagine that they would need to proficient in both areas, ie understanding the rules, but also prepared to look outside the square and challenge. Where I take issue with Everyman is in his use of question marks: he doesn’t always use them when he should, and he sometimes uses them pointlessly. I stopped for a while when I was at Sussex, as I switched to the Independent whose prize crossword yielded a steady stream of dictionaries. The Crossword Solver is designed to help users to find the missing answers to their crossword puzzles. My moan at 6dn about the fact that it’s a CD is a voice crying in the wilderness: lots of people, including some good setters, like them.

Down clues were `normal’, which helped a lot in providing checked lights to help in solving the trickier across clues. Porsche Cayman The Model For EverymanPorsche is well known for its lead in the sports and recreational vehicle market. This popularity is helped in no small measure by a wealth of cheap flights from most parts of the country, . The Oldie has two crosswords, of differing levels of difficulty, labelled `Genius’ and `Moron’, respectively. I didn't spot any rhyming pairs and was a tad disappointed that 1a wasn't put to better use and used as a possible theme.

I noticed a ‘Rozalyn’ and a ‘Rosaleen’ listed among this week’s winners – would either of those be our esteemed and prolific commenter ‘Roz’?I solved this but didn’t submit, as I was away skiing in France, without access to a printer – or a fax machine…perhaps the new Editor will modernise the Guardian/Observer prize puzzle submission process? I agree about the recent standard: the clues have been frustratingly imprecise: poor definitions and/or indicators, and an over-use of solutions embedded in the clue, but above all they aren’t entertaining: ponderous and over-literal: none of the sparkling wit of the predecessor. Colin Gumbrell took over as Everyman setter in 2014 or thereabouts, and I think his puzzles are a little bit harder than the previous ones. Incidentally, Colin Gumbrell also sets the Antico puzzle in The Oldie, a very enjoyable thematic puzzle that I do every month.
