About this deal

This edition includes a new 2022 remix, by Michael Brauer, of the eleven original recordings on Time Out Of Mind, sounding more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room. This is one of the most highly anticipated Bootleg Series releases and it follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions through incandescent live renditions showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. In 1996-97 Dylan wrote eleven tracks about growing old and these tunes are full of heartbreak and loss. Back cover variant to Fragments (Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996-1997)), with three label logos instead of two.

follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions through incandescent live renditions showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. The last disc you don't need if you have Tell Tale Signs, but I understand why it was included as it goes with the period, and they can charge more with another disc included. On Disc 3, the band works it into a gut-wrenching funk that Lanois loved but Dylan rightfully discarded.A fifth unreleased performance, Dylan's interpretation of "The Water is Wide," a traditional folk song of Scottish origin (and spiritual precursor of "Highlands," Time Out of Mind's epic closer) opens Disc Two. Dylan’s voice is cleaner and more audible in the mix, which will please listeners who thought Lanois’ original production was too murky and swampy, and with too many effects on Dylan’s vocals. If you had a bootleg copy of these shows you would think it was great but not on an official release.

Standing in The Doorway’ in ‘Version 1’ mode (CD 2 – 1997) sees Dylan trying out a much quicker tempo – it’s sprightly and really swings, with extra lyrics that didn’t make the album cut, while Version 1 of ‘Mississippi’ (CD 2 – 1997) a song that wasn’t on Time Out of Mind but was destined for 2001’s Love and Theft, is a delight – kind of honky-tonk-funk-meets-Cajun. Also included are 12 previously unreleased outtakes and alternate versions of songs written for Time Out Of Mind, including such iconic tracks as “Love Sick”, “Not Dark Yet” and “Make You Feel My Love”.This latest chapter, officially titled ‘Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. Disc five is a bonus disc containing all Time Out Of Mind related tracks that were previously available on The Bootleg Series Vol.

He couldn’t work this close to his home and his family, which, by now, included six children and multiple grandchildren. For a total contrast, listen to the stunning version of the hymn-like ‘Make You Feel My Love’ (take one – CD 3 – 1997) – a song with gospel organ that’s become a standard and has been recorded by the likes of Adele, Billy Joel and Neil Diamond. For the brooding and bluesy Time Out of Mind – Dylan wrote the songs while snowbound on his Minnesota farm in the winter of 1996 – Daniel Lanois was at the controls.

This set gets it right, consisting as it does of well over 60 minute discs but it also has more impact focussing on one album. But the story of Fragments—the story of the album Time Out Of Mind isn’t, but almost was—rests with “Mississippi. Like all of the stories surrounding the creation of Bob Dylan albums, this one bears traces of myth and marketing. Rolling Stone 's David Browne gave the album a positive review, writing that the Time Out of Mind sessions deserve the "under-the-microscope treatment".The playbacks were a disaster, musicians crashing audibly into one another as they struggled to adapt.
