About this deal

Published in 1945, it is one of the earlier examples of "poetic prose," and the mention on the back cover that it is like Anais Nin and Djuna Barnes makes me want to read both of them; in my reading experience it is closest to Jeannette Winterson, one of the authors I love and adore. The poetry of the work comes into stark contrast with the realities of the world they occupy as the speaker is interrogated by Arizona law enforcement, in one of the novels most compelling scenes. They left no descendents to embellish their saga, but only the white bones and the marks in the clay for archeologists to make into footnotes.

She may have sat down and wept but she clearly didn't remember Sion, or indeed the suffering of countless numbers of Jews, Russians, soldiers, air raid victims. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Para ella era inconcebible pensar en esconder su pasión, amar a distancia, o llegar a un compromiso que satisficiera a los biempensantes. Her mother allegedly tried to get her book banned and then bought and burned all copies she could get her hands on. The title was adapted by Ashley Hutchings for his album By Gloucester Docks I Sat Down and Wept, which includes the track "Love, Stuff and Nonsense", credited as Smart's work.

She totally falls in love with him before even meeting him and sets him up to move from England to America and they fall in love and they have a bunch of kids together. Yo creo que es una obra bellísima (sobre todo las partes tres y cuatro, ciertos párrafos sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial muy reconocibles ya en la cultura popular y la última parte que le da nombre). I realised that throughout their relationship, the idea of Barker was as important to her as the reality: the journey through the storm was as important as the arrival at his door.

And the relatability of having trusted someone who then abandons or betrays us, is central to the stories resonant ending. Written at a time (1940-44) when people were dying in their millions, she is living in comfort but full of self-pity. Predating (although not by much) the confessional feminist style made famous by Sylvia Plath, Smart wrote with uncompromising person honesty, paralleling in literature the deeply personal painting of feminist artists such as Frida Kahlo. Look at the cover, the praise showered on it for being true and real and a masterpiece, and really, all I felt was irritated. My room echoes with the screams she never uttered, and under my floor the vines of remorse get ready to push up through the damp.
