The Things That We Lost is a beautifully tender exploration of family, loss and how far we will go to protect the ones we love. Six-Thirty, the dog, is my favourite character ever and would have been great as narrator throughout the whole book.

Lessons in Chemistry is a story for all the smart girls who refuse to dumb themselves down despite a culture that demands otherwise. I fell in love with the main character immediately - a woman who has the audacity to want to earn a PhD in science - in the 1960's - what on earth was she thinking?

One of her colleagues is Calvin, an introverted, socially awkward Nobel-prize nominated scientist with a penchant for holding grudges, which is one of the things Elizabeth first admires in him, for “Elizabeth Zott held grudges too”, especially against a society that all but forbade women to do anything of importance. For those who admire a confident, bone-dry, and hilarious authorial voice, this novel achieves the difficult task of being both sharply satirical and heartwarming at the same time. True to form, Elizabeth refuses to play ball with the producer, declaring that “There’s nothing average about the average housewife”, and using the show to deliver cracking advice: “Courage is the root of change…Do not allow your talents to lie dormant, ladies. The story goes back to 1950s America, when opportunities to advance career wise, especially in the sciences were non-existent.

Donatti, approves her hiring but refuses to give her anything more than menial labor as a lab technician.Garmus’ writing is extraordinary, and her insightful commentaries on life, religion, bigotry, misogyny and stupidity result in passages that are absolutely worth sharing…Be prepared to laugh, grieve, and root for Elizabeth. Although she’s not interested in celebrity, Zott becomes the face of a cooking show through which she educates her viewers in chemistry, self-worth and agency.
