About this deal

When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. Mrs Harris has had quite a lot of exposure in the blogosphere of late, and normally I get annoyed when everyone is talking about the same books ad nauseum but this one really does deserve to be talked about, a lot. Early on in this blog I began rating the books I talked about on a 1 to 10 scale; it was meant to be a quick way to communicate my personal degree of satisfaction/pleasure (or the opposite) in each reading experience. Harris is an excellent character to use repeatedly in first-encounters – it shows how Cockney and brazen she can be, as well as the endlessly charming effect she has on everybody she meets. Mrs Harris is a wonderful heroine who you’ll be rooting for all the way, and Paul Gallico manages to weave stories that have a moral heart without being saccharine or twee.

What a joy to read two good, clean stories about normal everyday people who know how to enjoy life, pursue their dreams, and make life better for those around them. I'd read Mrs 'arris Goes to Paris last week, and I loved that so much, as soon as I finished it, I began this one. There among the wedding announcements is one for a Mr George Brown, described as an ex-soldier who had been stationed in England, and referring to the fact that this was Mr Brown’s second attempt at nuptials.I’ll report back on all of these as and when I manage to read them – but, for now, for when you want to be a little charmed yourself, you could do a heck of a lot worse than spending an hour or two in the delightful company of London’s finest, Mrs. It is this realisation of the value of friendship, positivity, self belief and taking joy in the simple things, that is the true treasure Mrs Harris brings back from Paris. I was enjoying the book, but the ending of the first story was such a disappointment that I don't think I want to read the second one - at least, not now. I like that this is a book focusing on an older women too, we’ll all be older one day and I imagine we’ll all want fabulous stories we can sort of see ourselves in. When Mrs Harris finally arrives at the House of Dior, she has no idea that her dream is about to be turned upside-down.

Harris, part charlady, part fairy godmother, whose adventures take her from her humble London roots to the heights of glamour. Like L M Montgomery, Paul Gallico has created a character filled with such life and warmth and laughter and tenacity that I closed the pages feeling like I had left a friend behind, and my heart and soul had been encouraged, uplifted and warmed by her presence. At Yale Law School, she continues to be a leader- and catches the eye of driven, handsome and charismatic Bill.

Harris, who ranged from the homes of the wealthy on the broad avenues neighbouring Central Park, where there was light and air and indefinable smell of the rich, to the crooked down-town streets and the slums of the Bowery and Lower East Side.Determined to make her dream come true, Mrs Harris scrimps, saves and slaves away until one day, she finally has enough money to go to Paris. Before they make the move, the duo is horrified by the abuse heaped on Little Henry, who lives with a foster family next door. Yes that’s very true – dream come true books are always about under 30’s and Mrs Harris shows how it’s never too late to have adventures and achieve dreams. Each book is rated in its own context, NOT in comparison to the entire range of literature, which would, of course, be an impossible task. There were also a few instances of racist language, particularly in the second book, which I found uncomfortable to hear, especially coming from Juliet Stevenson’s mouth!

On a side note–I have gotten atrociously behind in blog reading and have several weeks worth of posts to catch up with–but in case I miss anymore posts before your new journey begins–Have a great trip to NYC and I can’t wait to hear about your new adventures! It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Charlady is perhaps the more respectful term to use when referring to a paid part-time worker who comes into a house or other building to clean it for a few hours of a day or week, as opposed to a maid, who usually lives as part of the household within the structure of domestic service. A second novella is included in this edition, Mrs Harris Goes to New York, and I liked that it included a bit of romance for Mrs Harris.I preferred Paris to New York, which is always my complaint with these volumes with multiple books, but both were so sweet and fun that even liking NY a bit less, I still much preferred it to other books I’ve read. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking.
