The introduction’s warning—“every so often, the planet reminds us who’s boss”—rings out again at the conclusion, which explains how climate change could amplify each of these terrible and fascinating natural events''. There were also a few pages that were fully illustrated, such as the introduction and contents page, in which case the design and layout would be up to me. Robin Jacobs and Sophie Williams have taken naturally occurring disasters from around the world and broken them down to the how, where and why, making them understandable and engaging even for those initially left lukewarm by the topic. We often get asked about books to support the ‘Awesome Earth’ or ‘Natural Disasters’ topics for KS2 and we think we may have just found the perfect one. Working alongside Sophie was a godsend, because some of the elements we were describing are actually much more clearly conveyed in pictures.

Each section covers the science principles – ie the physics and chemistry behind extreme events; the cultural aspects, for example, myths, stories, and ancient beliefs; and for all topics – fun and powerful examples of the ‘biggest and worst’. In any given year, there may be between 200-300 large-scale geological or meteorological disasters on earth – and they’re becoming more frequent because of climate change. Tom Tolkien is an experienced teacher and educational consultant who taught for 20 years in primary and secondary schools, including Woodleigh School in North Yorkshire, where he was Head of English and ran a 4000 book prep school library for pupils aged 3-13. This brilliant book around natural phenomena - sometimes causing natural disasters on mass-scale - is fascinating and slightly sobering in equal measures: the geography and physics of tsunamis, volcanoes, blizzards, earthquakes and a whole plethora of other ways that mother nature will, from time-to-time, show who’s boss are all covered.

We look at why these things happen, what the impacts are and what to do if you have the misfortune to get caught in one! Today we talk to Sophie Williams and Robin Jacobs about volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and how they worked together to create their brand-new, engaging geography book EARTH-SHATTERING EVENTS, which manages to be accessible, fun and informative! Take a look at our full range of books for more stories to add to your child's reading routine here. The listicle format is a great one to use to engage young readers and it's the perfect book for inspiring some great “did you know? I have a degree in earth sciences, but even I found some of the scientific explanations hard to wrap my head around.

SOPHIE: It was a definitely a team effort, I would receive a document of text for each section of the book and each important piece of information would be broken down into an illustration. But in others, the political and economic reverberations of earthquake disasters have presented opportunities for renewal. We humans take our domination of the planet for granted, but sometimes nature reminds us that this is an illusion. The consistent format and style throughout the book will give pupils and teachers ideas on how to present their work.Sometimes I would need to add in extra illustrations or resize current ones to fit the layout of the page properly.
