About this deal

The inter-generational relationship between Ellie and her Grandma develops into something quite heart-warming too. Ellie soon realises that a girl trapped in a cat’s body needs some help and that she must learn some manners and make some friends fast. With the help of a brave mouse and a resourceful spider, Ellie succeeds in finding the ring, defeating the machinations of Jolly the cat and convincing her Grandma that she has learned her lesson. When she’s turned into a cat, we get to see Ellie for who she really is behind the sadness of missing her dad, while she’s given the chance to make some unusual new friends and ultimately find a place to belong.

Ellie is horrified at being a cat but grandma tells her that the only way she can be turned back into a human is to find her lost wedding ring. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. Malorie Blackman mixes comedy with a moral message in this sparky tale of Ellie whose rude, disagreeable behaviour at Grandma’s house leads witchy Grandma to label her a brat and cast a spell on her. There are very few illustrations in this book which I didn't like but a varied range of vocabulary to boost the children's literacy development. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Tom's scrapbooks are always fascinating, full of photographs, notes and snippets of history that inspire his books, and this one is no different! A cautionary tale of brats, cats and a little bit of magic from much-loved and bestselling author Malorie Blackman, particularly suitable for struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers aged 8+. Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! Jolly the cat is seen as a very well behaved feline by grandma so she is very content at being changed into a girl. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc. won the Young Telegraph/Gimme 5 Award - Malorie is the only author to have won this award twice - while Hacker also won the WH Smith Mind-Boggling Books Award in 1994.Her unhappiness instead of being obvious to adults is seen as bad behaviour and is considered a "brat " rather than seeing the real problem she has. Ellie doesn't take to her life as a cat but what she does find is Jolly isn't very well thought of by the other creatures in and around grandma’s house. Malorie Blackman’s excellent story entertains with humour, perfectly matched with Matt Robinson’s illustrations which superbly bring Ellie and her animal chums to life. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors.

So with a little bit of magic and some help from Jolly the cat, Grandma's going to make sure that Ellie changes her ways. Malorie has also been awarded the Children's Book Award and the Eleanor Farjeon Award as well as an OBE for her services to children's literature. Ellie discovers the importance of kindness and friendship and the satisfying ending resolves the family problems that lead to her challenging behaviour.Grandma’s made it clear that if Ellie doesn’t succeed in her challenge, she and Jolly the cat will change places for good! Malorie Blackman, illustrated by Matt Robertson Ellie is not happy to be staying with her grandmother. Published by Barrington Stoke, on cream paper in a dyslexia friendly font, this is pitched to appeal to KS2 children with a younger reading age. Ellie is the rudest, most spoilt child her grandma has ever met and it’s time that she learnt a lesson! Ellie doesn't want to as its just another move she can do without bit her mother insists as her father is going away to another job and she can’t look after her.
