I would highly recommend these novels to anyone with time and a penchant for the darker psychologist thriller, alongside a police detective who will stop at nothing to get answers. Now I hope I don't scare anyone off but the beginning 80 pages or so read to me like a Catriona Ward novel but nowhere near the degree of difficulty she engages her readers with. The Mirror Man" is dark Scandi-noir with a side of masochism, slavery, drugs, brutality, torture, neo-Nazism kidnapping and people trafficing. The scenes are so well described that you feel Joona's angst as well as feeling like a fly on the wall in every scene.
A young girl is kidnapped in plain sight and taken into custody, where she is locked away with a number of others. Their captor is unpredictable, and as wily as he is cruel: he foils every one of their desperate attempts to escape . Seems I have joined the party rather late; this is the 8 th book in the series and only the first one I have read. Jenny Lind was abducted on her way home from school and taken to a remote location where she and other girls face many horrors.I thought the ending was really well done and I could feel the emotions the characters were going through as Lars Kepler wraps the story up. Aside from Joona, Kepler introduces two new characters who also serve as major actors in the mystery. The book carefully balances the competing, and correct, ideas that Joona has been irreparably damaged by his work and that he is absolutely essential to saving peoples’ lives. You can see that there is a dangerous killer operating here, and it is not yet clear what their motive is.After the events of Lazarus, The Mirror Man sees him struggling to reconnect with his daughter due to her seeing him kill Jurek Walter. It is a stand alone and there is some good background info but I would have liked to have started at the beginning. I didn't love the writing and thought it was quite simple at times with the majority of sentences beginning with basic pronouns. But if an author does not take any risks at all, they also run the risk of losing readers as they will not see a reason to read new entries. I have long come to enjoy the work of Lars Kepler, especially with the detailed narrative and strong storyline.
Yet it never ever came close to losing me as a reader and actually pushed me forward wanting to know those answers and as I said everything is delivered in a very convincing way. Some of their books read quicker than others, and this one definitely aligns more with the pacing of a psychological thriller.
This wouldn't have bothered me as much if it hadn't been for over-the-top graphic violence verging on torture porn that associates mental health issues with appalling violence and abuse. Having said all that I wouldn't say no to reading more of the series so clearly the book did work for me despite my concerns.
