Then comes the "Note From The Author," which is more extensive than the average, and really inspiring and self-reflective, and which gives readers more to think about, on an adult level.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood for it because it was very melancholy in voice (obviously the main character was facing a lot of things--racism, bullying, her mom was hard on her, etc.
A beautiful story for children and adults about the importance of looking up, paying attention and sharing adventures. I enjoy verse and tennis and middle grade, and the writing style just didn't work due to the choppy line breaks and spacing. It would be nice if nasty words were the only things that get hurled at the LGBTQ community and its supporters.
The text is deceptively simple, with the first half starting with a young boy in a rainbow heart shirt, who tells a friend that he has a problem, because other kids were laughing at his shirt. There’s a visual storyline of flying kites that come together to form a rainbow, just as all the children come together with their parents, allies, and a larger supportive community to celebrate that what makes a family is love.
