About this deal

Masters of character-driven stories, Jones and Bennett yet again deliver with a foul-mouthed thief, an enchanting fae prince, a headstrong woman, and an ex-Queensguard, to name only a few…Though the dreamy fae-mortal romance doesn't flourish until the latter half, fans of the authors will happily subsist on the story's consistent sharp-witted voice alone. Entrepreneurship and freelancing are examples of fields where having a broad range of skills can be beneficial. Rags is an excellent thief, until he's caught by the Queensguard and forced to help a sadistic and cruel sorcerer to find an ancient Fae relic, a powerful relic unlike anything they ever knew. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. However, the counter-argument to this could be that it doesn't give you time to get to know the main character, Rags, but don't worry, you won't learn much about the others either.

Oh and I kinda get why it's labelled "YA" but I also kinda disagree (drinking game : take a shot every time I use the word "kinda" in this review). It's built off of familiar ideas- the poverty, the court full of manipulation and lies- but the whole dynamic with the fae is fantastic. Forced to use his finely honed skills to nab pieces of an ancient fae relic, Rags is stunned to discover that those “relics” just happen to be people: A distractingly handsome Fae prince, A too-honorable Queensguard deserter, A scrappy daughter of a disgraced noble family, A deceptively sweet-natured prince, A bona fide member of the Resistance, And him.

The fact that the main characters were constantly being watched felt super restrictive and stunted a lot of potential development. The writing wasn’t vibing with me, all the modern cursing (even though it doesn't mention which era this is set in) and those weird long-names for no reason. I really loved seeing this disaster squad being thrown together and trying to figure out their pasts/what is even currently happening. Their relationship is a slow burn, an achingly beautiful queer romance between them, a chemistry and a yearning intense and lovely to read.

Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). The pace was brilliant, the deception and trickery gripping, and that puzzles and challenges that Rags has to face are really interesting. With the heist and intrigue of Six of Crows and the dark fairy tale feel of The Cruel Prince, this young adult fantasy debut will have readers rooting for a pair of reluctant heroes as they take on a world-ending fae prophecy, a malicious royal plot, and, most dangerously of all, their feelings for each other. Each character thread builds toward a satisfactory conclusion, which can be tricky given the number of POV characters in this book. I can see the advantages of both however, I'm indecisive as to which way is the best course to choose. And, sure, six unexpected allies against one wicked enemy doesn’t make for generous odds, but lucky for him, Rag’s not generous—he’s smart.
