If only there was some way to put some of those smarts into an FPV drone, make it durable and have it all ready to fly right out of the box. Wouldn’t that be the perfect beginner FPV drone? Tested in an outdoor open environment without interference. The video transmission bitrate varies with operating environments.
DJI Avata is compatible with DJI Goggles 2, the DJI FPV Goggles V2, and the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2. But what exactly is it that makes Avata the safest and arguably the most powerful CineWhoop-style FPV drone to fly today, straight out of the box? Let’s find out… 1. Avata is much smaller than DJI FPV Combo Inserting the card into the Goggles V2 is easy; push it in, and you’re done. Inserting the card into the DJI AVATA is fiddly as the slot is inside the drone prop guard. This means you must pull aside the rubber port protector, move the prop out of the way, and wiggle in the card without the rubber flap and prop getting in the way. To remain oriented during flight while wearing goggles, DJI Avata and DJI Goggles 2 display the Home Point where the drone took off from. This augmented reality (AR) perspective gives an extra sense of orientation to help the pilot locate the immediate environment in seconds. DJI Avata FPV drone is now available to buy. After that crash though, we decided to hand the drone off to someone a little more experienced with FPV drones just to get a gauge on how this compares to a regular FPV drone.

First of all, the AVATA battery is popped in and plugged in. Next, the Goggles V2 is plugged into an external power source, and my iPhone contains the DJI Fly App which is again plugged into the Goggles V2.Though I think the most underrated feature of the DJI Avata is that it can also grow with you. As great as the Motion Controller is, I foresee a point in time where the basic movements you can make with it become a limiting factor. You can’t dive buildings or do flips or any of that fancy shit you see experienced pilots making.
Despite only using two antennae this time around, the DJI Goggles 2 sport the latest version of DJI’s transmission tech, Ocusync O3+. DJI claims that it’ll provide a video and control link of up to 10km – an impressive distance – though this is limited to 2km in Europe due to regulations. In my experience, the display has been able to provide crisp 1080p footage with just a 30ms response time up to a few hundred metres away in a built-up forest, and that’s improved when in open environments. Once the batteries had recharged, which took slightly more than nine hours for the three batteries, about 3 hours each, it was time to test the use of the goggles. Again with the spotter at the ready, I used the Motion Controller to navigate through a gate and through the garden; the live view feed and the over-enthusiastic spotter guided me through the environment without issue. This is like playing a VR computer game rather than being outside in the real world.

DJI Goggles 2 do not support astigmatism correction. If you have specific vision requirements, please consult your doctor before use. So, it can handle minor collisions. And there is the Turtle mode, which can flip the drone if it is upside down after a crash. If you have small hands, then I’m sure you’re laughing; if you have medium hands, it’s a challenge and if you have large hands, find someone with smaller hands to do it. Likewise, if your eyesight is anything less than 20:20, get someone else to insert the card. Compatible with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, which is sold separately, and the DJI Motion Controller. DJI RC Motion 2 currently does not support the DJI Virtual Flight app. The headset is also incredibly light for the kind of quality and range you get from them. In an open plain, we were able to go well over 1km before the signal started to degrade. The only thing is that this is a digital signal, which means when you lose signal it will just freeze. And that was part of the reason why I had my first big crash.
