About this deal

This grass seed is explicitly blended for shaded areas of the garden and comprises seven different types of grass, many of which have been recommended by the RHS: Covered with a green coating, it seems to deter birds – possibly because they can’t see it as easily, or because it no longer smells like seed to them. Either way, once raked in, they are less likely to steal it all away than they might with other seed. Industry Connections: We maintain close ties with manufacturers and brands, offering insights into trends and upcoming products. The first consideration is what you use your lawn for. Whilst a 100% Fescue mix makes an excellent ornamental lawn, it’s not really practical for a lived-in garden. For example, it shouldn’t be played on because it’s not hard wearing enough.

Divide the area that you want to sow into easily manageable sections. A soft, warm, moist, soil is best for seed germination. If you have a large lawn, there won’t be much point in you buying a 400 g bag of grass seed that will only cover 9 – 16 m². These smaller containers are best suited to smaller lawns, offering excellent quality to small areas but not being cost effective in larger ones. If you’re having issues getting a lawn developed, try this product from Empathy which can be sowed for an entirely new lawn, overseeded or used as a patch repair. This 10 kg grass seedhas a 1:1 ratio of Dwarf Perennial Ryegrass and Strong Creeping Red Fescue, which provides a good balance of strength and comfort. It feels slightly softer than mixes that have a higher ryegrass content, creating a lawn which is more comfortable to sit or lie on, yet still remains hardwearing.

Rot is your enemy. The single biggest danger to seed germination is rot - either before germination or after "damping off" when the seeds germinate. To reduce the risk, ensure you have good free draining soil mix and that it is moist but not wet. The best investment you will make is a bottle of (very cheap) 4% hydrogen peroxide (mixed with water 1:4) - this disinfects and also encourages germination. Unless the seed variety absolutely requires it I prefer NOT to cover my seeds trays with plastic bags, Whilst germination is often faster this way, it greatly increases the risk of rot. I prefer to place my seed trans inside a watertight plastic tray and water from the bottom - airflow over the surface reduces the risk. The surface is kept moist as required by spraying with my water/peroxide mix (see above)

It comes in a large 10 kg bag which can cover an area of approximately 200 m²; however, if that sounds like too much, it will also keep for the next year as well, so any that you don’t use won’t be wasted.Often, you’ll notice that grass seed isn’t made up of just one species of grass. In general, several different variations are combined to improve the overall properties of your lawn.

Raking the area, sowing the seeds, and then sieving on topsoil is all that is really required to encourage this Speedy Grass Lawn Seed to grow. It will need regular watering, but only enough to keep the seeds slightly damp – if the weather conditions are good, with some drizzle as well as sun, you may not even need to water that much all. In my experience, the best grass seed products are the ones that contain several varieties of grass. Some grasses are hardwearing; others cope well with shade, some do better than others in drought conditions, and others grow tall while a few are creeping. To rate the grass seed blends within our roundup, we based our recommendations on testing, our experiences with sowing multiple blends, the latest research and several factors. Some of the factors that we considered included the blend’s contents, coverage, growth rate/germination, durability, the inclusion of an applicator, box sizes and value. Best Grass Seed Overview The product doesn’t come with a spreader or even holes in the side of the box. It has just one large hole, so if you don’t own a seed spreader, you’ll have to either tip the box up or use your hands. This is far from ideal, and it would be much better if the box had a series of holes in the side so the seeds could be sprinkled more accurately.

Conclusion

Speedy Seed only contains one type of grass seed – Ryegrass. And about half of that will only last one year at most. Independent: We will tell you exactly what we think of a product and we would never recommend anything we wouldn't use ourselves. Prepare a seeds tray with a good compost mix at room temperature - ideally 50/50 compost and vermiculite.
