About this deal

Overall, image quality is perfect for the fair-weather photographer. For those that like to shoot in low light, the Canon EOS 100D does seem to struggle at higher sensitivities, and time will have to be spent editing the raw files to get the best from the camera. The Canon EOS 100D is a new mini-DSLR from Canon, designed to fit between the Canon EOS 600D and Canon EOS 700D, as smaller option for those looking for a Digital SLR. Featuring a similar specification to the Canon EOS 650D, with an 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Hybrid AF focus, full HD video and 4fps continuous shooting, the camera is 25% smaller, and 28% lighter than the 650D, with every component made smaller. Canon EOS 100D Features

Image quality lived up to our high expectations. We love the colour output of EOS cameras, and with well-chosen automatic settings and extremely low noise at fast ISO speeds, it’s hard to get anything but great results from this camera. Only when shooting in an underground bunker, lit only by torches, did I find that I needed to reduce the exposure compensation by 2EV to keep the scene dark. It is obviously the role of evaluative metering to make images look bright and visible, and in a situation like this the metering will try and brighten the scene. At the core of the Canon EOS 100D is an 18-million-pixel, APS-C-size CMOS sensor. Canon has been using an 18-million-pixel CMOS sensor for a few years now, and this latest version features a hybrid phase-detection AF system built onto the sensor. We have already seen this used in the Canon EOS M compact system camera, and the EOS 650D and new EOS 700D DSLRs. The EOS 700D is really just a reprised version of the EOS 650D, with little in the way of new features. That concludes our evaluation of the EOS 100D's ergonomics, handling, feature set and performance. Let's take a look at its Image Quality next. During Movie shooting: Auto (100-6400), 100-6400 (Whole stop increments) ISO can be expanded to H: 12800 There’s a built-in flash on the Canon EOS 100D with a guide number of 13, although once again Canon owners will no doubt be pleased with the presence of a hot shoe that supports Canon’s EX series of speedlights.

In fact, the Canon EOS 100D and 700D are remarkably similar, both having the same resolution sensor, a 3in, 1.04-million-dot touch-sensitive LCD screen, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600. Both can also shoot video at a resolution of 1080p at 30fps. The viewfinder still gives best results, with extremely fast performance from the primary 9-point autofocus sensor and photos captured every 0.5 seconds. Nine autofocus points don’t compare well with the 39 points on the Nikon D5200, though. Whereas the 650D and 700D use nine cross-type point for added sensitivity, on the 100D only the centre point is cross-type. On the upside, autofocus was more reliable than we’ve seen from the 650D and its predecessors using their kit lenses, with only a small number of shots focused slightly in front of the subject we aimed the camera at. Canon EOS 100D review: Image quality The sensor itself has an ISO range of 100-12,800, extendable to 25,600 in the ‘H’ setting. The sensor, as the name suggests, features built-in phase-detect autofocus (AF) technology and as a result supports continuous AF when recording HD video.

The usual array of Canon picture styles is available and it is possible to set three custom styles. I’m a big fan of the colour produced by Canon cameras and the EOS 100D doesn’t disappoint. In particular, I found that blues skies looked nicely saturated and took on an almost polarised appearance. In general, the Canon EOS 100D’s AWB setting worked well, though it produced rather a clinical neutral colour under tungsten light. Shooting modes include Auto, intelligent Auto, as well as full manual shooting, along with new candle-light, food and kids modes. It's possible to shoot creative effects with a preview showing the effect before taking the shot, and new to the EOS 100D is the ability to record two versions of the photo, one with the effect applied and one without, both as JPEG files, so that beginners don't need to resort to the RAW file if they don't like the effect, or left the effect on by mistake. We didn't try the camera with physically bigger lenses with longer focal lengths however, which we can see that this might make its use impractical for some, as it would introduce a front heavy look and feel. But with the consumer-targeted kit zoom or a 40mm pancake lens attached, the 100D comes into its own as an everyday tool.

Enjoy high quality performance, low cost prints and ultimate convenience with the PIXMA G series of refillable ink tank printers. The 700D is still widely available and remains significantly smaller, though, shaving about 10 per cent from each dimension and weighing 30 per cent less, at 407g (body only). The shrunken handgrip looks strangely emaciated but it’s a surprisingly comfortable fit even in large hands. The battery has a 380-shot capacity to the 700D’s 440 shots – not ideal, but we could live with it.While the 100D's specification and operation is otherwise very similar to the more expensive 700D, and we get the same Digic 5 image processor, here continuous shooting speed is limited to a 'mere' 4 frames per second rather than 5fps to further differentiate the two.

Image: Although the Canon EOS 100D resolves a fair amount of detail, raw images must be captured to really get the most from the camera

Canon EOS 100D (Rebel SL1) Scene modes

With a variation on the 18-million-pixel sensor that has been used in a number of Canon EOS cameras, there was nothing too surprising about the images produced by the EOS 100D.
