Conclusion

Following the success of the two direct-to-video films, and the international success of Hideo Nakata's Ring (1998), Kurosawa and Ring screenwriter Hiroshi Takahashi helped Shimizu develop a theatrical Ju-On sequel starring Megumi Okina and Takako Fuji. The film, titled Ju-On: The Grudge, was released on October 18, 2002, to critical acclaim, and was followed by a sequel, Ju-On: The Grudge 2, that was released on August 23, 2003. Likely to be the real draw of this set would be the first time release in this country of the original straight to video films. Ju-On: The Curse is a bare bones, low budget shot on video affair that works on the same principle as the cinema films only in nascent form. With almost no budget, these films rely on atmosphere, which the cheap look actually enhances, whilst Fuji’s terrifying performance as Kayako provides the real chills. Ju-On: The Grudge 2 is presented on a single Blu-ray disc, in Japanese audio with optional English subtitles. Legacy on-set interviews with Noriko Sakai, Chiharu Niiyama, Kei Horie, Yui Ichikawa, Emi Yamamoto and Shingo Katsurayama Sake imbued with a powerful energy will taste different to certain people. If someone has a strange reaction to it, the house is too dangerous for them.”

Ju-On ( 呪怨, Juon, lit. "Resentment Curse", also known as The Grudge) is a Japanese horror franchise created by Takashi Shimizu. The franchise began in 1998 with the release of the short films Katasumi and 4444444444. Shimizu attended the Film School of Tokyo, where he studied under Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Kurosawa helped Shimizu shepherd the Ju-On projects to fruition. Announced by Arrow Video this morning, Ju-On: The Grudge Collection is due out this December, featuring a brand new 4K restoration of Japanese classic Ju-On: The Grudge. gets into the fact that at least some of the sobriquets assigned to various films in the series (like The Curse and, yes, maybe even TheJu-On: The Curse and Ju-On: The Curse 2 are together on a single Blu-ray disc, in Japanese audio with optional English subtitles. The Ju-On franchise came at a time when global interest in Japanese horror, especially in Japanese vengeful ghosts, or onryō, was at it’s height. It spawned several Western adaptations, but it’s really good to see the original Japanese films gathered together. A must own for the discerning horror fan.

Kayako, Toshio (Ryōta Koyama) and the cat are still murdered by Takeo (Matsuyama) but the reason is explored in full (like in the US remake) in decidedly grisly detail. Other victims are different, one of whom is a schoolgirl played by Chiaki Kuriyama. Something that wasn’t carried over to the theatrical films was the character of Kyoko (Yuko Daike), whose spiritual powers enable her to read the negative aura of the house.

Several Ju-On print publications were published by Kadokawa in Japan, and Dark Horse Comics in North America between 2003 and 2015. Every single Ju-On film has received a novel adaptation, except for The Grudge 3.
