Produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions, with animation production by Toei Animation in Japan and AKOM in South Korea, the film was succeeded by a television series anthology which ran in late 1987. A ten-part episode from that series, [6] The End of Flutter Valley, served as a sequel to the film. When Mimic becomes afflicted with a mysterious illness, Megan and the ponies embark on a series of odd adventures to find the four golden horseshoes with the power to heal the ailing unicorn. Spike goes in search of his roots and joins a dragon horde, but finds he doesn't agree with their bullying ways. The Baby Ponies are in trouble again -- this time they lose their own shadows! The adventure begins as they follow a Pony Star named Knightshade. Knightshade's assistant, Zeb the Zebra, turns out to be the shadow-grabbing culprit. By the time Megan and the other Ponies catch up to the Baby Ponies, nearly all of their shadows are gone! Molly must take a daring ride for help. Will she be successful? Or will the Ponies lose their shadows forever?

E1 As Sweet Stuff walks away with the others to tell the ponies not to wink out, she walks right over Megan’s legs.

The special was edited into a two part episode of My Little Pony 'n Friends television series and re-titled "Escape from Midnight Castle". The opening animated sequence with narrated voice-actor credits, as well as its end credits, were removed and replaced with the standard 1986 TV series opening/closing. Also omitted is the two and a half-minute animated musical number "Little Piece of Rainbow", sung by Tony Randall. The episode aired at the end of the TV show's first season, in November 1986. A similar edit was done to the follow-up 1985 TV special, Escape from Catrina, which aired at the end of the second season as "Escape from Katrina". Three human children, siblings Megan, Danny, and Molly, often fly across the Rainbow to join the Little Ponies.
