The purpose of using Lametta in a Christmas tree is to make it look like a starry night. When candles on and around the Christmas tree sparkle in darkness, the shine of Lametta dominates the surrounding, filling it with a peaceful, magical aura that only a few can resist falling for. Lametta gives a beautiful, aesthetic look to all of the objects it is hung upon. But, most people who initially used heavy metal tinsel for decoration are of the opinion that Lametta made of plastic cannot be compared to the original charm of silver tinsel, that would shine through and through and would stay better on a certain object, despite the issues of tarnishing. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, the word is from the Old French word estincele, meaning " sparkle". In the 16th-century the word "tinsel" was used for a variety of lightweight fabrics with a metallic effect made with silk and gold and silver thread. These tinsel fabrics were used in elite clothes, masque costume, and for heraldric banners and flags. [1] Elizabeth of York bought "tynsell satin" in 1502 and the wardrobe of Margaret Tudor included "tynsen" in 1515. Tinsel and "tilsent" were less costly than Cloth of gold. [2] Tinsel was used for a veil or caul worn by Mary I of England at her coronation in 1553. [3] Silver tinsel fabric, described in Italian as tocca d'argento, was used for the sails of mechanical ships at a masque at the wedding of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Francis, Dauphin of France in April 1558. [4] Nuremberg, the city that first introduced the world to Lametta, is mentioned in a documentary in 1050 as an imperial castle. In the next five centuries, the city became a strategic location due to the presence of trade routes. The Nuremberg Castle often hosted the Imperial Diet, thereby getting renowned as the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. In the 15 th and the 16 th century, Nuremberg became the center of the German Renaissance.

Never has a Christmas decoration sparked so much debate. While most declared they’d never let tinsel within six feet of their six-footer, there’s always been something secretly alluring about tinsel and its gloriously kitsch appearance, conjuring up wonky, unashamedly over-the-top Christmas trees of junior schools, Santa’s grottos, Christmas fetes and elderly relatives’ homes.

[15] Tinsels of various types are popular materials used in fly tying. A market filled with Christmas gifts, sumptuous beer and loads of friendly faces to mingle with is undoubtedly the best place to have a great time with your kith and kin. A visit to the bars or cafes in the city is one thing you will never regret.

By the early 20th century, manufacturing advances allowed cheap aluminium-based tinsel, and until World War I, France was the world leader in its manufacture. Production was curtailed during the First World War as a result of wartime demand for copper. [6] Whatever the opinion may be, Lametta is still well known among admirers of beautiful Christmas tree, and many families still make use of Lametta during Christmas, just as their ancestors did. Tinsel is a type of decorative material that mimics the effect of ice, consisting of thin strips of sparkling material attached to a thread. When in long narrow strips not attached to thread, it is called " lametta", and emulates icicles. It was originally a metallic garland for Christmas decoration. The modern production of tinsel typically involves plastic, and is used particularly to decorate Christmas trees. It may be hung from ceilings or wrapped around statues, lampposts, and so on. Modern tinsel was invented in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver. These fabulous cascades of silver tinsel strands will transform your home into a glamorous ice palace perfect for celebration season. Simply festoon around your tree for show-stopping impact. A great way to recharge your Christmas scheme for a New Year’s Eve party.Lead foil was a popular material for tinsel manufacture for several decades of the 20th century. Unlike silver, lead tinsel did not tarnish, so it retained its shine. However, use of lead tinsel was phased out after the 1960s due to concern that it exposed children to a risk of lead poisoning. [8] In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded in August 1971 that lead tinsel caused an unnecessary risk to children, and convinced manufacturers and importers to voluntarily stop producing or importing lead tinsel after January 1, 1972. The FDA did not actually ban the product because the agency did not have the evidence needed to declare lead tinsel a "health hazard." [9] The word ‘Lametta’ is also used figuratively for a row of Military awards and decorations in Germany. In India, tinsel has an entirely different usage. It is used to decorate images, to make garlands for weddings and other rituals, as well as to make ornaments for Elephants and horses.

However, Lametta made out of silver would tarnish soon. Hence, during this period, lead replaced silver as the primary material used for the production of Lametta. Lead tinsel posed a risk of lead poisoning in children during Christmas. These days, Lametta is made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) with a coat of metallic finish. The only downside to Lametta made up of plastic is that being light materials, they do not dangle so well as heavy materials such as lead.
