Those that aren’t Star Wars nerds will discover deep and thoughtful game with loads of strategy. Something as simple as how many points you build your list with can dictate the flow of the game. Do you kit out your units with upgrades to max out their potential? Do you just build conservatively around two key units and have a larger bid to be the Blue player? Maybe you just spam the board with loads of cheap units and out activate your opponent to get cheap shots in. The strategy is yours to come up with. Is it Possible to Learn this Game? Ask questions! Moving your units into position is vital for claiming victory in Star Wars: Legion, and the exact positioning of every miniature is crucial. The position of every unit on the battlefield is open information—what you need to plan for is how your opponent can use those units! Good positioning and the ability to read the battlefield could allow you to catch your opponent in a deadly crossfire or pin an enemy unit between two of your own.
As skilled as he is, Kenobi may have met his match in General Grievous. Proudly wielding the trophy lightsabres he has collected from the Jedi he has defeated in battle, Grievous is a particularly dangerous opponent, his agility making him equally adept at avoiding damage as he is at doling it out. Within this Core Set, you’ll find one beautifully detailed General Grievous miniature that can be assembled in three different ways: with two of his trophy lightsabers and a cloak; carrying a single lightsabre and a DT-57 “Annihilator” blaster pistol while shrouded in his cloak; or with all four trophy lightsabres at the ready. Star Wars: Legion is played over the course of six rounds as you and your opponent duel over objectives on a battlefield of the Galactic Civil War. At the end of six rounds, the player with the most victory tokens (earned from objectives) wins the game. Star Wars: Legion, the latest game in the Star Wars line from Fantasy Flight Games, is not a complete experience. It’s not even a complete retail product. But it sure is pretty. Star Wars Legion combines the best of card and miniature gaming, and the Shadow Collective Starter Set simply adds to your immersion into the universe. A caveat to this review is that you need to own an existing core set from the Star Wars Legion collection, as this starter set is not a standalone game. Ultimately, Star Wars: Legion is more than just a game—it’s an invitation to create an army that only you could have built, gathering troopers, vehicles, and iconic characters from the Star Wars saga and pitting them against your opponent’s army in battle. The first step in building your army is to select your side and choose the units that will make up your army. Even within the Core Set, you already have impactful choices to make with units of Rebel Troopers and Stormtroopers, along with 74-Z Speeder Bikes, an AT-RT, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker. You may be planning to play out a small-scale skirmish between just a few units or a massive battle, but either way, the units that you choose are the foundation of your army. The miniatures themselves are amazing and there is a lot of variety between them in terms of how they look and how they can be armed, from the Mandalorians to the Pykes. Star Wars: Legion is a tabletop miniatures game. It can be played out of the box on a table or other flat area, but part of the fun is painting your miniatures, and creating terrain to add a realistic look and feel. Game mats are also available separately to provide a detailed surface to play on, or you can create your own using various materials available from hobbyshops. Perhaps a plain green felt mat for grassy planets or white felt for a snowy planet surface. If you have a 3D printer there are even various buildings and accessories available online that you can print and paint! Games StatsEach game of Star Wars Legion will be very different. Included in the Core Set are numerous deployment cards and battle objectives. You will find yourself battling to take key locations, or perhaps to infiltrate your units to the opposing player’s deployment zone. Skirmish can best be described as the diet version of the game as it is a great place to learn the mechanics of the game from activation control, how to best utilize certain units. It is very beginner friendly and there are a set of deployment, mission, and condition cards that are balanced around the smaller point total and table. The nice thing about these battle cards is that they are very similar to their standard format counterparts so you can figure out which cards would be best for when you get a chance at larger games. “Do or do not, there is no try.” Faction-specific, which offer minor bonuses anyone in a given faction can use, but usually only affect specific units.
