About this deal

An elephant never forgets– elephants are believed to have good memories, based on observations that in the wild the herd will follow similar paths over many years. They also appear to recognise many humans, as well as other elephants, even when separated from them for decades. All done and looking oh-so-adorable! These make a great puppet or story-telling prop and it would be fun to make some of the other elephants from the story, both in their usual grey colour and in their decorations from the Elmer’s day parade! Kids could make up their own designs and be as inventive as they can. It’s a spellbinding story. Adapted from US author Kate DiCamillo’s children’s novel, The Magician’s Elephant is set around 100 years ago in the fictional town of Baltese, which is struggling to recover after a recent war. The plot follows a young orphan called Peter, who lives a dismal life with the troubled veteran who looks after him.

Covid has, of course, tried its best to dampen the magic, delaying the show by a year and wreaking havoc during rehearsals; unsurprisingly, it is not easy to finesse scenes when performers must wear masks while they sing. “It’s difficult for us to know whether something isn’t quite working, or whether we’re just responding to the fact that you can’t hear the voices as clearly as you should,” Teitler says. Newspaper Elephant Craft Reading the sprawling, epic tale, Harris and Teitler decided to go for a grand, operatic score. “You’ve got a whole panorama of a town so it’s asking for something big,” says Harris. Above all, though, the composers have prioritised infectious, peppy tunes. “It’s definitely the kind of musical where you want to sing,” adds Harris. One of the challenges of our upcoming musical The Magician’s Elephant is bringing a life-sized elephant on stage, and then making it disappear. Our elephant is a puppet that will be controlled by three actors, each operating different parts of the body as it moves around on stage.
