About this deal

On the other hand, the AmpliFi family, represented by the HD Wi-Fi system or the Alien, is for the home environment. They are simple Wi-Fi routers, easy to use but with a limited feature set. All UniFi Cloud Gateways, as of November 2023. These models are newer, and they all run UniFi OS. They have been called UniFi OS Consoles, Gateway Consoles, and now Cloud Gateways. They act as routers or firewalls, and also run the UniFi software applications like Network and Protect. These can’t be used with Cloud Keys, cloud services, or a self-hosted UniFi Network application. Powered by UniFi OS, the UDM SE gives you full control of all your UniFi devices, including access points, Protect cameras, Talk phones, and Access readers. It's also a future-proof console since it will be able to run all upcoming UniFi OS applications. Engineered for end-to-end simplicity, the UDM SE features an integrated Bluetooth radio that streamlines the initial setup and configuration process, which can be completed in minutes with the UniFi Network application (web or mobile).

Besides the built-in Wi-Fi, the Dream Wall is practically the UDM-SE with a wall-mounting design and a larger touchscreen. The faster WAN port is nice but for me on the Sunny Isle of Man this isn't a selling point since very little gets that fast and we can just want to move right along. In fact, coupling the UDM-SE with the U6 Enterprise and you'll get a better Wi-Fi solution than the Dream Wall with a couple of hundred US dollars to spare. (The console can manage any UniFi APs via the Network application.) For Wi-Fi, you will need to get a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP) such as the Unifi 6 Liteor Unifi 6 Pro, both of which I use in my home. I also have a detailed comparison of the various Unifi WAPs.It took me quite some time to finally review the Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE). I generally cover consumer products, and this is an advanced device designed for pro-consumers, SMBs, or even enterprise environments. You may choose to restrict the collection or use of your personal information in the following ways: Finally, the UDM-SE has eight PoE Gigabit LAN ports. You can use them to host any wired devices, including PoE cameras, IP phones, access points, and more.

Both UDM-SE and UDM-Pro support Wireguard VPN now (earlier only the UDM-SE did). What else do you need to buy along with the UDM?The UDM is the first UniFi product that works well as a home router, thanks to its friendly design. In a way, it's a bridge between the two product lines. The UDR further solidifies that approach, making the UDM-Pro or UDM-SE applicable to demanding homes. The UDM-SE hardware leaves much to be desired, especially on the network port front. The console would be much closer to a dream come true (for me) if it had a few 10GBASE-T ports. Still, it's vastly superior to the UDR, as shown in the table below. Ubiquiti UDM-SE vs UDR: Hardware specifications PoE interfaces (2) PoE+ IEEE 802.3at (pair A 1, 2+; 3, 6-)(6) PoE IEEE 802.3af (pair A 1, 2+; 3, 6-) Are you looking for the ultimate home networking solution? Look no further than the Unifi Dream Machine SE (UDM SE) and wireless access points. This powerful combination of hardware and software provides a comprehensive, secure, and reliable network for your home or small business. With the Unifi Dream Machine SE, you can easily set up a wireless network that covers your entire home or office. And with the addition of wireless access points, you can extend your coverage even further.

The amount of customizability can be overwhelming. But you can start with default settings and gradually change over time as your needs grow. Excellent traffic management and VPN support The UniFi family -- represented by the Dream Machine (UDM), UDM-Pro, the Dream Router (UDR), or UDM-SE... -- aims at business/pro/enterprise users. They are comprehensive consoles acting as the central controllers of various products, of which networking devices are only part of the picture. Also, since the router has just one 10Gbps LAN port, I put it in a double-NAT to copy data from my 10Gbps-capable server via its other 10Gbps WAN port. This setup is also not ideal for performance. You can do virtually anything you'd want to do with the UDM-SE's ports or connected clients, and in comprehensive ways. And the console has everything you can think of regarding network, Wi-Fi, and mesh configurations. Both Pro and SE comes with dual WAN ports, but the difference is SE has 2.5GbE while Pro has 1 GbE. If you have a modem and internet service that is beyond 1Gbps, you could certainly see the benefit from this additional port. Engineered for end-to-end simplicity, the UDM SE features an integrated Bluetooth radio that streamlines the initial setup and configuration process, which can be completed in minutes with the UniFI Network application (web or mobile). If you want to use transceivers to convert them into 10GBASE-T ports, the TP-Link TL-SM5310-Tworked best out of many I've tried.

PoE ports are great for UniFi Protect camera and some of Access points; however, certain access points and switches require higher than regular PoE power supply e.g. U6-LR, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-HD etc. So if you plan to use these access points and still needing those level of PoE supply, you will need separate switch unit. At which point, PoE Ports on UDM Pro SE may no longer be relevant. The quoted wireless specification is given as the maximum radio performance. Achievable range and throughput will vary depending on the regional regulations where the radio is deployed. You can get Wi-Fi 7 router today, but the standard is not yet ready, and nobody knows how exactly it will be when it's eventually certified.

Run the same Unifi Applications (Network, Protect, Access, Talk) and one other but we'll ignore that. As a network controller, the UDM-SE has everything the UDR has and much more. You can run multiple applications with the UDM-SE, of which the Network app is the default. The UDM line of products are essentially enterprise-level network appliances that combine the following functions into a single device: I actually believe this drive is intended to allow the UDM SE to be used in larger deployments that might have problems due to the internal eMMC and it's smaller capacity. Larger deployments would have the need to store more information such as Network events, logs around user access, voice mail or recorded messages etc.
