About this deal

Relic Bearers: The Templars points-based upgrade option is a massive winner, hitting the sweet spot of being interesting, broadly useful and powerful. We’ll be basing a lot of the pricing and value for this box off the most recent Beast Snagga box, so we have a pretty good idea of how much most things inside will cost when the hit the shelves individually. Obviously, though, these are not set in stone yet and we’ll update this post with the actual pricing and savings when they become official. Every Khemrian Blood Bowl team is held together, quite literally, by a liche priest – an ancient wizard who also fulfils the usual roles of a head coach. Tomb Kings teams play in the Sylvanian Spotlight, coming in at tier two. With up to four Strength-5 Tomb Guardians per team, they excel at bashing other teams off the pitch – even if their ball-handling skills leave much to be desired.

While GW excited us for a few hours by initially announcing the Pyreblaster had a Damage stat of two, this was swiftly corrected to D1. It’s still a tasty piece of kit, though: All three squads are kitted out with as many pyreflamers as possible, as well as (heavy) bolt pistols and Astartes chainswords for close-range dominance. 40 angry Space Marines running at you at full speed, supported by a Marshal with the Crusader’s Helm (to ensure they’re all in range of his Rites of Battle aura ability), and a Primaris Ancient to keep them fighting to the last, is certainly an intimidating prospect. Primaris Crusader squad - The Crusader Squad is a mix of Neophytes and Initiates led by a Sword Brother. They have access to a mix of weapons, including the Pyre Pistol and Pyreblaster, short-range D6 weapons that automatically hit their targets. The datasheets included in the codex has equipment options for the Marshal (Primaris Captain) and Castellan (Primaris Lieutenant), along with the named characters High Mashal Helbrecht and Chaplain Grimaldus. It details the rules for the Emperor's Champion and Primaris Crusader Squad, which are included in this set, and also a firstborn marine Crusader Squad and the powerful Primaris Sword Brethern unit.

And yet, I do wonder if all the overcharged, self-indulgent gothic silliness that captivated me as an 11-year-old, and fills me with joy now, will appeal to new players, in an age where the rest of the Primaris range isfull of extra webbing pouches, satellite dishes, stealth systems, and all things ‘tacticool’. I do hope so – but, then again, each to their own. The good thing about GW being a vast, global games company now is that it can make more than one or two things at a time, and serve a wider variety of different tastes. More than ever, there is something for everyone – although I do wish it would talk straight to us fans a bit more. Wings: Two from me here, one as an attempt at a “serious” build, one doing something far sillier that Templars makes me want to try. You have been warned The Extremely Serious Crusade of Brother Gallant I am constantly – albeit slowly – working on the army. The next step in my neverending painting challenge will be the stunning new models of Helbrecht and Grimaldus, but I also plan to convert some human-sized allies in the form of an Inquisitor and some acolytes, inspired by the figures present on that classic cover. Stratagems: There’s some real hot stuff here, with a modified (but still strong) version of Devout Push joined by some new friends.Warhammer Community previewed these earlier in the week, showing off Abhor the Witch, Destroy the Witch and Accept Any Challenge, No Matter the Odds: Marshal - The Marshal uses the profile for the Primaris Captain but has different wargear options, either auto-flamer or plasma pistol and a master-crafted power sword or master-crafted power axe. Just three Secondary Objectives here, all with suitably death metal names – exemplified by the first, Bathe Your Blade in the Blood of Your Foe. Sitting in Purge the Enemy, this works identically to the Blood Angels’ Blade of Sanguinius, letting you set up the kind of Warlord fight which is normally a bad idea in the competitive arena but can be a good idea if you think your guy is going to win and score 15pts for doing so.

In the revealed photos, the squad has been built with five Initiates, four Neophytes, and one Power Sword-armed Sword Brother. We don’t yet know whether the Crusader Squad in the army set (or the inevitable future standalone set) can be built with a different ratio of Initiates to Neophytes – but bear in mind that the unit will probably retain some version of the current Paired Combatants rule – meaning Neophytes gain a buff if there are more Initiates in the squad than Neophytes. Then when you get into the box it is all pretty organized and comes with another little art piece to help protect the box. Instructions & Sprues A bit pricier but also great is Bombastic Delivery. For 2CP this lets one of your Chaplains both automatically recite one of their litanies this Command phase and use one extra litany – so essentially you get to fire off the Litany of Hate in addition to ensuring your most important one for the turn lands. Chaplains are great, Templars give them a bunch of extra utility, and this is a great tool for them – good stuff. I’m not a regular Warhammer 40,000 player anymore but the rules seem solid here, nothing broken but not too weak either. The army are close combat beasts and the newly improved High Marshal Helbrecht helps show that off. Look at his revamped Sword of the High Marshals! All characters and close combat units are so good when they’re in your opponent’s face.

Speaking of cool stuff, Helbrecht’s new model is awesome, and his rules live up to it; he’s a beefy 8-wound boy and he hits like a train when he reaches combat. Whether he makes it in competitive lists depends on whether that melee potential can be realised, but GW have at least had a very good go at making it worth trying, and in a rare bit of foresight his default Warlord trait is a good one, so you can even go ahead and make him your actual-factual Warlord if you want to without lumbering yourself with something pointless. Helbrecht: Primaris Helbrecht is hilariously over the top, instantly one of the deadliest killers in the 41st millenium – as it should be. Redemptor Dreadnought - This dreadnought is the only miniature not new in this box, and comes armed with a heavy flamer or onslaught cannon and heavy onslaught cannon or macro plasma incinerator. Also going rules-heavy is the new Chaplain Grimaldus. His stats are pretty ordinary for a Primaris Chaplain, as is his wargear – a regular plasma pistol and an artificer crozius, which is just an extra point of AP. He’s also now a Master of Sanctity, so no more doubling up on those, Templars players. The Crusaders have a ton of options and each has a lot of variations. The way they do the instructions makes it really easy to build them how you want with plenty of color paths. They don’t say it in here but everything is numbered on the parts os technically you could clip everything out at once.
