About this deal

The GTV company in South Africa released all 26 English dubbed episodes on 6 DVDs. They are currently the only country to release all of Mew Mew Power on DVD. These DVDs are in Region 2, PAL format. What was really surprising to me was just how satisfying the romance elements of the plot played out. Ichigo is pretty singularly focused for the most part on her main crush Aoyama, who eventually becomes her steady boyfriend. Though this doesn’t prevent her from occasionally having conflicting feelings about other boys which given her age is not all that surprising or unexpected. It was also nice to see that other characters were given their own relationships though some were better than others. (One in particular was frustratingly annoying) Ultimately the ending both for the main plot and the romance is extremely satisfying and well done.

Additionally, one of the other significant changes I'm cognizant of is the main cast that isn't Ichigo. Each girl is a character in her own right and is made loveable and engaging to watch. You care about them. It's a change I really love, Tokyo Mew Mew New feels like a series about all five girls rather than just the one. And, even though Ichigo is still the main character, it's through loving her friends that we as a viewer can relate to her and the way she loves and cares about them. I'm excited to watch season 2 and see more of them all! At first glance Tokyo Mew Mew basically looks and feels like a rip-off of Sailor Moon with maids and catgirls, and for the first 15-20 episodes that’s pretty much what it is. But a funny thing happened on my way through this series; it got surprisingly good and wonderfully addictive. It should also be noted that my three year old daughter thinks this is the best thing in the history of television. While I certainly wouldn’t say that’s the case, watching her sing and dance to the opening "My Sweetheart" is almost too adorably cute for me to bear. Masha: Masha gets renamed Mini-Mew. While Masha wasn't able to talk in complete sentences, Mini-Mew is shown to speak perfectly. Ask any die-hard fan of Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi's Tokyo Mew Mew, and they would say that it's one of those shows that were once in the pipeline slew of the gaining classic Mahou Shoujo a.k.a Magical Girl genre of the early 2000s, right at the time of the immense success of Sailor Moon that has made its way into the West that has taken into effect for years. Of course, with the advent of Madoka Magica that completely turned and screwed Ichigo meets a cat at the train station and discovers that, even in her human form, she can understand him. The cat, named Asano, later comes to the café, and tells her that he is searching for the cat he loves, a Lilac Point Siamese named Jacqueline whose owner moved away. The girls agree to help him find her, but learn that her owner has taken her to a cat fair to find her a fiancé. Asano speaks to her there, but she says she cannot leave her owner because she is his most precious memory of his late wife. When one of the other cats is turned into a chimera anima, Asano comes to Jacqueline's aid. After the girls defeat the monster, Jacqueline's owner decides to allow the two cats to be together.Mew Mew Renee- Like the others, the DNA is cut, to remove the fact that she was naked, 4Kids added a bra and underwear on her before her Mew Mew clothes appear. When Mew Zakuro comes forward to land gracefully on her ending scene, the scene is sped up, but her ending pose is kept.

At first, A la Mode was not warmly received by fans, who disliked its fast pace and the replacement of Ichigo as the main character. These days, the sequel is remembered more fondly, if still not as fondly as the original, and many fans have expressed a wish for it to be adapted into an anime someday. Parts of it were only shown during the group transformation sequences 4Kids made.

Zakuro is offered a leading role in a movie in Hollywood, but this would require her to move to America. She has not decided whether to take the job or not, but she tells Ichigo that the girls still know nothing about saving the Earth and that she is losing patience with them. Meanwhile, Quiche learns that the conditions on his planet have gotten worse and that he must hurry to find the mew aqua so he can save his people. The girls also renew their search for mew aqua, however when the aliens appear, Zakuro refuses to transform. Mew Mint is hurt while protecting Zakuro, but Zakuro does nothing. After the battle at the café, Ichigo complains to Ryou who acts indifferent. The girls decide to confront Zakuro about her behavior. Masha leads them to a church where they find Zakuro with Quiche. Even though some aspects of the artwork and animation are a bit dated when compared to what we are used to today, I still found Tokyo Mew Mew to be very good visually. The character designs were cute and not too perverse or unrealistic. Since this is Mahou Shoujo that means transformation scenes! Thankfully these aren’t shown to us in their entirety for the whole series. While some of the animation footage (we pretty much always seem to see Ichigo's complete transformation and battle animation) gets a bit repetitive this is primarily in the first half of the show. When things start getting interesting towards the end and the cast is bigger the show does not waste half of its runtime showing scenes we’ve already seen 40 times before already. In other English speaking countries (Canada, Australia, South Africa), all 26 English dubbed episodes aired. The United Kingdom only aired 25 episodes (they never aired the English dubbed pilot episode). Manga Pacific in Australia released 2 single disc DVDs containing 10 episodes (the pilot episode and 1-9). There has been no indication that they will release the rest.
