About this deal

The graffiti was not emblazoned across the wall as we might expect by a notorious flamboyant killer out to strike fear into the neighbourhood. Halse reported: "There were three lines of writing in a good schoolboys round hand. The size of the capital letters would be about 3/4 in, and the other letters were in proportion" Columbia Road market is for flowers and plants but the other 8 offer a full range of items for sale.

Less than an hour later, the killer ran into Catherine Eddowes and completed his grisly work. Eddowes’ body was horribly mutilated–exhibiting massive knife wounds with the internal organs strewn around her body. There can be no doubt that he was going to ground as he headed away from the murder scene, so the location of the bloodied fragment suggests that he was heading to a home, or bolt hole, situated in the East End of London. As with almost everything Ripper-related in the Whitechapel Murders, divisions even among those who agree that the GSG is valid are evident. A majority of people in the pro-GSG camp believe that this 12 word message blames the Jews of the East End for something: job displacement, Klezmer music blasting at 2am, socialists and anarchists, foreigners speaking a foreign language, different looking; the list goes on. In any event, it’s for something that they are blamed. Recently, Mr Robert House added another explanation, which was featured in the latest Ripperologist, issue 58. I recommend purchasing a copy of that issue and reading Mr House’s fine story on Aaron Kosminski for his views. Now let’s get to the real topic here: the Goulston Street chalk writing, known to most as the Goulston Street Graffito.

In fairness to Sir Charles Warren, many of those who saw the graffito commented that it looked faded, as though it had been there for some time. Prices are very reasonable and it draws eagle-eyed bargain hunters from all over Tower Hamlets. There is also an Idea Store that gives you access to the council’s services and advice. Location Also, The Daily Telegraph, Oct 2nd, '....while throwing a light upon the movements of the murderer after he quitted Mitre Square, an important piece of evidence was obtained yesterday. When the body was examined there was a piece of white coarse apron still attached to it. The missing portion was discovered yesterday in Goulston Street....' You must book your one hour free session using the RingGo app or calling the number on the sign plate (22 spaces) Roman Road Square Market (Monday to Saturday)Goulston Street is situated in Whitechapel in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and in the heart of East London. The nearest tube station to Goulston Street is Aldgate East, which is just 1-minute to the south-east. Also Detective Halse said at the inquest '...about 20 past 2 I passed over the spot where the piece of apron was found I did not notice anything' Also, Sir Henry Smith, though heavily critisized for being inaccurate in some statements, was at least known to be present for this report: Sir Charles Warren stated that "the writing was on the jamb of the open archway or doorway visible to anybody in the street..." [4]. This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building.

Douglas, John; Olshaker, Mark (2001). The Cases That Haunt Us. New York: Simon and Schuster. pp. 36-7. Moments later another officer arrived at the scene, and Long asked him to guard the building - telling him to keep a careful watch on anybody entering or leaving it – whilst he took the portion of apron round to Commercial Street Police Station and handed over to an inspector. No other London borough has such a choice of vibrant, diverse and contrasting street markets. Each one is an open space event that gives you a genuine taste and flavour of east London. There is a common belief that he must have been drenched in blood having carried out such brutal and gruesome murders. There have been a few suggestions over the years, that it must have been inside the entryway, otherwise P.C. Long would have seen the apron from the street. And as it was recorded that white walls were above the writing, it has been assumed the graffiti was low down, some even suggest very low down, all erroneous assumptions.

WARREN JUSTIFIES HIS ACTIONS

Donald Swanson described the writing as being "upon the wall of a common stairs", also claiming that it was blurred [5]. Superintendent Thomas Arnold's report (quoted below) suggests that the writing was at shoulder height.
