About this deal

The Samsung UE55BU8500’s 55-inch screen boasts a native 4K resolution and support for the HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ high dynamic range formats. In line with all Samsung TVs, however, it does not include support for Dolby Vision, which is a pity given how many sources are now available in it. The key here is a combination of performance and value. So, has Samsung achieved the perfect balance with the BU8000? Design The panel sits on a centrally mounted T-shaped stand, styled in dark silver to match the strip along the bottom of the screen. The support column at the rear has a V-shape that gives the impression the screen is floating in mid-air.

Approximate diagonal size of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the diagonal is calculated from the width and height of the screen. Power supply and consumption Information about the power supply and consumption, energy efficiency class, etc. 110VThe percentage of the approximate area, taken by the active part of the screen, to the total front area. That’s a positive, though. At a touch over 25mm deep for our 55-inch version, the chassis is enviably slim, and the bezels surrounding the screen are minimal too. It can be wall-mounted, of course. If you don’t fancy that option, though, and would rather stand your new TV on a surface, the Samsung’s feet are usefully close together, so your surface needn’t be as wide as the screen itself. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. It sets a lower and an upper humidity level for safe operation and is measured in percentage.

There’s also a nicely nuanced overall feel to most types of image on the BU8500, and while it might not deliver the impact we’d ideally like, at least it tends to keep everything in balance, without the momentary losses of discipline many rivals at this price point – including the impressive TCL – occasionally succumb to. We’d recommend toning the Contrast and Brightness down a little. They’re set to maximum out of the box, which is too strong but understandable given that there’s not a huge amount of peak brightness to this panel. The Samsung UE55NU8000 is a very capable mid-range TV, with a decent set of features offered at a very competitive price. It’s attractively designed, boasts a state-of-the-art smart platform, and has an incredibly low input lag of just 18ms. It even sounds good, which is surprising in a TV this thin. There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used. The Samsung BU8500 is on sale now, though at the time of writing this particular model is available in Europe and some other countries, but hasn't been announced for North America or Australia (though it is available in New Zealand). The static contrast shows the ratio between the brightest and the darkest color, which the display can reproduce simultaneously, for example, within one and the same frame/scene. Its motion handling abilities are rather decent when watching West Side Story in 4K HDR. The Custom setting is good with no noticeable artefacts and judder, while the stronger Auto setting gives the dance scene at the school a glossier, more artificial look (usually around the mouths of people as they talk), with a hint of stutter and judder if you look closely.
