Pine-sphagnum peat moss – peat moss wood-moss group, in the Botanical composition is from 35 to 65 % remnants of sphagnum mosses and from 15 to 35% pine. Fenwood peat – Contains the remains of willow, birch and alder, which grew in wet woodland (4,000 to 5,500 years old)

The filtration coefficient, m/s (minimum values at the peat type high decomposition degree, a maximum of the peat low-lying type.)Perlite is also pH neutral and does not decompose over time, making it a long-lasting option. Conclusion Cotton grass-sphagnum peat moss – peat moss grass-moss group, in the Botanical composition is from 35 to 65 % of residues with a predominance of herbaceous cotton, 35 to 65 % of sphagnum moss and not more than 15 % pine. li>Royal Mail 24 - 1st class service that aims to deliver within 1 day of dispatch (not guaranteed).

Sphagnum moss is perhaps the most desirable form of organic matter for the preparation of growing media. Drainage and aeration are improved in heavier soils while moisture and nutrient retention are increased in lighter soils. Germany, Canada and Ireland are the principle regions of Sphagnum moss production. This moisture-absorbing material has been harvested for centuries and is a popular additive to soil mixes due to its ability to improve soil aeration and water retention capabilities. Magellanicum-peat – peat moss group, in the Botanical composition is from 70 to 100 % of the residues of sphagnum mosses with a predominance of sphagnum-magellanicum and not more than 10 % hollow mosses.

Benefits and Uses of Peat Moss

Mark Twain said that there is no such thing as a new idea. Instead, we rearrange old ideas in a sort of ‘mental kaleidoscope’ to create new concepts and innovations. The idea of using peat for water treatment certainly fits into Twain’s paradigm. Drumochter has been selected for its extensive areas of blanket bog which lie not only midway between the oceanic blanket bogs of the west and the drier, more continental bogs of the eastern Grampians, but also midway along the north–south transition. The kinds of bogs represented and their surface patterns reflect this intermediate position. In the Pass of Drumochter there is the most easterly extensive occurrence of western M17 Scirpus cespitosus – Eriophorum vaginatum blanket mire with typical species such as deergrass Trichophorum cespitosum, purple moor-grass Molinia caerulea, cross-leaved heath Erica tetralix and bog asphodel Narthecium ossifragum. These low altitude bogs are generally rich in the bog-mosses Sphagnum capillifolium and S. papillosum. At higher altitudes M17 is replaced by M19 Calluna vulgaris – Eriophorum vaginatum blanket mire. The high altitude bogs show widespread hagging and extensive bare peat, a common phenomenon in the upland bogs in UK. Above about 800 m heather Calluna vulgaris is replaced by cowberry Vaccinium vitis-idaea and montane dwarf-shrubs, mainly bog bilberry Vaccinium uliginosum and crowberry Empetrum nigrum ssp. hermaphroditum. There are different types of peat moss, each with its own unique characteristics. Sphagnum Peat Moss One of the companies at the forefront of developing new uses and industrialisation was the Eclipse Peat Company owned by the Alexander family. By the early decades of the 20th century they had built factories, were manufacturing products such as “peat litter” (bedding for animals) and selling “Hummell” for putting greens and race courses.
