Description

The Sage Smart Kettle, available in the US from Harrod’s , is a 1.7 Liter, 2,400-watt smart kettle with variable temperature settings and a 20-minute keep warm timer. Unlike the previous products, this smart kettle doesn’t have Wi-Fi functionality or a mobile app. The device can’t be operated remotely, and it has no voice activation or smart home integration. Some users have also reported that the iKettle has a tendency to suddenly disconnect from their Wi-Fi network. A stable network connection is needed if you want to enjoy continuous use of the iKettle. But, once it’s properly synced with your smart hub, making hot drinks couldn’t be simpler. For me, the main selling point of the iKettle 3.0 is its voice assistant support, which wasn’t available in the previous generation Smarter iKettle 2.0. Alongside Alexa and Google Assistant, the iKettle 3.0 can also work with IFTTT recipes, allowing you to be pretty creative. Other returning features include its ability to keep water warm, help prepare baby formula and customise the water temperature for speciality teas, all controlled through the companion iOS and Android apps.

The app syncs easily with the iKettle and can be used to set up an IFTTT account to further increase the iKettle’s functionality. Controls are straightforward and easy to use. Because the Smarter app isn’t a dedicated iKettle application, it doesn’t offer as many in-depth smart controls as you’d expect. The IFTTT recipes can make up for this, but it would have been great to have them natively supported. In the end, I started setting it to a few degrees below the temperature I actually wanted. As with the previous generation, the Smarter iKettle 3.0 is able to at least retain its heat very well.As with Google Assistant, you can now use Alexa voice commands to control your iKettle’s temperature settings, scheduled boiling times, and much more. Aside from also being able to tell Alexa to turn off the kettle if you decide you don’t want it boiling, that’s it for your voice commands. I really wish the kettle could offer a readout of its capacity; otherwise, you need to keep jumping into the app – or, heaven forbid, get up and manually look inside the kettle to ensure there’s enough water for your next cuppa. Should you buy it? The Smarter iKettle 3rd Generation is a good kettle. It boils water and allows you to adjust the temperature exactly as you like it. The design is simple and minimalistic, allowing you to control from your phone without any flashy manual dials. Although it’s been more than three years since the iKettle launched the 3 rd generation of its iKettle line, there has been no news of the release of a fourth iteration. There’s no doubt that the developers at Smarter are working on designing new ways to improve the current iKettle, but so far, no news has been forthcoming.

With the iKettle 3 rd Gen, it’s never been easier to fix yourself a hot drink. With the convenience that this feature-rich smart kettle brings, you’ll always have the hot water you need, when you need it. The iKettle 3rd Gen has a built-in water sensor that sends information to the app to alert you if there’s not enough water in the kettle. With a simple glance at your phone, you can easily decide if the iKettle needs a refill. You can even use the app’s Wake Up Mode to wake you up via an alarm and start boiling water at the same time. To use the iKettle, open the Smarter app. Once you choose the device at the opening screen, you’ll see a dial with a number in the middle. This is the default temperature setting in Celsius. Tapping the number in the middle will change it to degrees Fahrenheit. By moving your finger along the dial, you can set the precise temperature that you desire. Once you’ve done so, tap on Start to begin boiling. It’s all relatively easy to follow – but, unfortunately, I experienced the same problems we saw with the iKettle 2.0. Some types of tea are best made at 80 or 90°C. For green teas and matcha, it was easy to set the temperature to the right place, and I would get a notification when it had finished.Millie Fender is our residentsmall appliances editor, and tea addict. She drinks at least 5 cups of tea a day, and eats copious amount of pasta, so the Smarter iKettle 3rd Generation was thoroughly tested by Ideal Home before this review was written.

Diving into the settings, the iKettle 3.0 has other modes, such as Wake Up mode that sets an alarm to boil the kettle. This is useful for having the kettle boiled for when you rise in the morning. For parents of young children, the Formula Mode can automatically boil the kettle and then allow it to cool down to the desired temperature, alerting you once it’s done. Finally, Home mode can have the iKettle 3.0 automatically boil when the geolocation in the app tells it you’re arriving home.Specifically, the incredibly incremental temperature controls – you can dial up or down by 1 degree – are largely pointless. Say you set it to 80ºC, the kettle will boil to that and give an audible beep to notify that it’s reached that temperature. But then the water will keep heating, typically to 7-8ºC higher than the target temperature. The Smarter SMKET01-US Electric iKettle may not be as expensive as many high-end smart kettles on the market, but it’s still a bit pricey. If you’re someone who only rarely drinks hot beverages, or doesn’t have stable Wi-Fi, then the cost may not be worth it. If you’re a coffee or tea aficionado, however, it may be the best thing you’ll ever buy. If your iKettle 3 rd Gen is shutting itself down before the water reaches the temperature you set, limescale may have built up in the kettle. You’ll need to clean the jug before you start boiling again. To clean the limescale from the iKettle, do the following: The iKettle is made with several safety features built-in, including a dry boil prevention system. Whenever the iKettle is turned on, the water sensors determine the amount of liquid inside the kettle. If it detects that there isn’t enough water, the iKettle automatically turns off within 16 to 20 seconds and notifies you via the Smarter app. But a week on from setting up the iKettle 3.0, it works fine. Saying “Alexa, turn on the kettle” has the kettle boiling without any issues – I named the device ‘Kettle’ as it seemed most logical. It’s meant I’ve done away with the Wake Up mode, as I can just ask Alexa to turn on the kettle when I wake – or not, if the occasion dictates. You can also say “Alexa, set the kettle to X degrees” – which, again, is easier than jumping into the app.

The kettle is quiet, too. I never found it distracting and my phone connection never failed me, so it delivered on the convenience I’d expect from a smart kettle. However, while the Bosch Sky kettle is less smart, it is far nicer to use thanks to the tactile base and visual appeal. It’s also cheaper, so unless you want something you can control remotely, I would suggest opting for the Sky kettle over the iKettle. About this review, and the reviewer Several years on, the iKettle, a Wi-Fi-enabled, app-controlled kettle is now on its third-generation, and continuing to bring convenience to tea and coffee lovers alike. The company has been the recipient of several industry awards, including the Design 100 and CES Award in 2017. The iKettle has become one of the bestselling kitchen smart products in the UK. You can re-boil another jug full of water then throw that away to make sure no vinegar/lemon juice traces remain. Once done, your iKettle 3 rd Gen should be limescale-free and resume proper boiling. So, on firing up the app you first need to select the location and then the appliance, before you’re at the screen necessary to begin using the kettle. It’s a minor frustration – one that could so easily be improved.
